The Keep Messages setting applies to all message types. Your best work around is to manually delete old SMS messages. Open messages, press ALT+S to open the SMS inbox. Highlight the date line, press the scroll wheel, select Delete Prior.
FYI - All BlackBerry devices have a limited amount of storage space. At some point you will use up all the space. When this happens, the oldest messages will be automatically deleted regardless of the Keep Messages setting.
