RIM is not trying to keep up with anyone. They develop the platform with business users in mind. Consumers have discovered how useful BlackBerrys are for every day use too, so RIM threw in some multimedia features. Really though, these multimedia features are almost an afterthought. BlackBerrys are purpose-driven. If multimedia is your primary focus, BlackBerrys are not for you.
And there's plenty of room for all the major manufacturers to have a "killer" product. This hype about an "iPhone killer" is stupid. Nobody is going to kill the iPhone except Apple, and nobody needs to kill the iPhone.
