I know of one solution that will work for sure. If you have no problem being on BIS, just do that. Input your work email into BIS and it will find it and it should work fine.

Same problem the Iphone has, and that solution really does work. You can always set it to 3G when you are in an area that doesn't have wifi, and does have a strong 3G signal. You get used to it.
