Unless your doing top secret stuff both are fine in my opinion. What I put most of the thought into is what is everyone else using. If you're the only one on BBM then it's not very useful.

Before you do an upgrade, sync your BB, then clear your calendar events via the DM, preform the upgrade then re-sync, this is what I do, there maybe an easier way though.

Correct. Use the carrier that works the best in your area. But I wouldn't say VZW is bad at all. I have had them for over 9 years and they have been nothing but great. They always work were others...
