Stupid question, but it has to be asked... have you tried re-booting the PC. Sometimes (noticeably on dell's) the USB ports will die and nothing short of a cold-boot (turn off and wait 20 seconds)...

When you install the desktop software at home, select the 'BlackBerry Internet Email' option... this way it doesn't install the re-director. Best thing to do is to un-install the desktop software...
