You should look at the Policy (_POLC_) log files....

In the log file do a search for the string pollformissingapps. This is the point where the BES sends out the poll requests to the devices to see...

It was the BES security policy "Allow Third Party Apps to use Persistent Store"
Set this to true and bingo. java.lang.error was gone.
