When I open a sms message there is a black square before the date/ time received on all the messages. Does everyone see this? Is this by design?

I have the same issue. I swore this worked on my 8700 once I upgraded it to 4.2 but it doesn't work on my curve at all. Are you using an Inter-tel phone system?

I'm not really sure. I have the T-mobile device which already has the theme unlocked. I think you need to look at this thread about replacing the alx that unlocks the zen theme....
