No there is no way to make it a default browser. Sorry. Altho I love opera, there are times when the default browser can't be beat. Such as DL apps, ringtones and pics.

What os are you using? I lnow tmos new os has an issue with bbmess alerts not showing on the home screen. I myself use the 8707 vodaphone on my 8700g. Its stable and works well with all alerts.
