The solution (for me anyway)

This problem is fairly persistent with my 8800, but herre's the only thing that works for me.

Remove battery and sim card. Reboot without sim card. Remove battery again. Re insert sim card....

As for the sim... Yes. It is VERY pre cingular. It's the "Minutes without limits" AT&T GSM Charter plan. Blue, not 3G. Apart from the limitation of not having a Blackberry browser, it seems fine. ...
