How to make transparent banners, etc.

I have successfully created my own themes but have a question. Can someone point me to files, or the instructions to create files, of transparent banners, etc. so that a picture set as the background can be seen in its entirety?
The sitcky thread is getting unruly in terms of trying to learn from it, so I am posting this separately. If this is in the big sticky, I apologize in advance for missing it, and would appreciate someone simply directing me to the post # in that thread.

Thanks in advance,

JT

Well? there are many ways with many different graphic software. Here is one way using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0

1. open the image/icon/banner
2. select move tool (left tool bar)
3. click any number key 1-9 to reduce the opacity.
4. save as another file name, to keep the original intact.

Using Jasc Paintshop Pro 9

1. open the image
2. select layers (top menu)
3. select properties
4. reduce the opacity
5. save as a different file name to keep original file clean.

Or use the eraser tool with each image to clear the images and leave it 0% opacity.

Hope this helps?
