unlimited data with tether: no go

Went in to get the torch this morning and they wouldn't let me upgrade without changing my data plan. I could have unlimited data or tethering with 2gigs of data. I'm grandfathered in with unlimited tethering and I'm not about to lose it.

Don't need a new phone that bad. My bold is just fine. I'll think on it a while and if I decide i can't live without it I'll just have to pay retail for it.

that does suck... if it helps any, think about the one time $500 you have to spend today vs the possible multiple times you have to spend a couple hundred each time you go over.

I would look at it that way and possibly pay today... I am going to a store today to find out, as my OLAM says I am/have been eligible for an upgrade since March.

Yea that's a good way to look at it. definately got me leaning that way.

So what would they charge you after 2G are used if you were on that plan?

From what I read on AT&t site, $10.00 for 1 more gig and it doesn't say after that.

They let me keep my voice and unlimted data plan.

Just go to tether.com and get their tetherberry application. Permits fee-free tethering. BTW, I just got the Torch. The screen isn't as bad as they say, although small text can be jaggy. Great phone otherwise.

I could have kept my unlimited plan also just not with tethering.

When i went to change phones about a month ago, I was told by an AT&T rep that as long as I go to another smart phone, I will never lose my unlimited data unless I chose to change the data plan. I haven't had a problem...yet lol

Really? I can tether with my unlimited plan. Was doing that alot before
most places installed hot spots.

Is there some note on your data plan stateing tethering was not allowed?
Or you can tether, just get charged more for doing it?

VRaptor 08-12-2010 02:56 PM

My plan is unlimited data with tethering. I pay $20.00 a month extra for tether. They no longer offer that. the highest you can get is 2gig tether. My plan is grandfathered in because I had it before they changed.

Well boys and girls my sad story has a happy ending after all. I called a AT&T store near where i work to see if they would sell me the torch for 499. He said he would so that yesterday afternoon on the way to work I stopped in.

They got me one and at the register I told the CSR what had happened that morning. So she said she would get it a try because that shouldn't be right. She ran into the same problem and the CSR next to her told her to talk to the store manager, which she did. Came back in a couple of minutes and a few keystrokes later I had my upgrade and kept my data plan.

My hats off to those guys. They went the extra mile when they didn't have to:smile:

This seems to be a problem all over. It's not just the company stores, resellers or on-line stores. I went though total hell with AT&T trying to keep the unlimited data plan on an upgrade. I can totally see where it drove you nuts too. I've normally done my upgrades through the on-line retailers as the cost was half of what the brick and mortar stores wanted, but all of them seemed to have a twist on extracting more money from you or derailing you on the unlimited data. I don't normally think conspiracy theory, but something was very rotten at AT&T. I sent CS my saga of what I went through on trying to upgrade. They did reply to my email of which I’ve kept saying they were very sorry for the frustration and that some places lacked the training on making upgrades on the unlimited data plans. Basically if you have a unlimited data plan on any smart phone or BB and upgraded to another BB or smart phone the unlimited plan would follow the new phone, but the cost could be as high as 30.00 per phone depending on what the unlimited plans cost before the tiered pricing went into effect.
