Curve randomly deletes all call logs / text messages / closes all bbm convos

My curve has done this a few times, the first time was when I first got it... and now twice in the past few days.

At random, I will look and notice that all my bbm conversations have been closed, all of my text messages deleted and all of my call logs erased.
If while it is doing this I get a text message, I will never receive it. My inbox will remain empty and everything that comes in will erase before the phone even notifies me I have a new msg.

It will continue to do this until I pull the battery.

It is not a memory issue because the phone has a 4g card in it and all media is stored on there. I have 7283850Bytes free space on the device.

I have the messages to delete every 15 days, and until this occurs the phone has no problem storing my messages for weeks.
It is becoming incredibly annoying because I have numbers in my call history that I need, and I often don't realize it's having one of it's fits for hours so all messages I get are forever lost.

Take a look at this:

Also 7MB of memory is VERY low.

lena_epchtein 08-27-2008 12:57 AM

It has been doing it even when I first got it and it had NOTHING on it, like my first 4 or 5 text messages ever before any programs or anything.
Also if it is a memory issue, why does it have no problem storing 15 days worth of messages then up and wipes EVERYTHING clean, this time it hasn't even built up a days worth of messages.
Why does a battery pull fix it, and why does it continue to delete every incoming msg without even notification?

If it did it when it was brand new, it could have been an issue with the wrong time/date.

However, this mysterious text/call log deletion is a low memory issue. Pulling the battery restores memory and that's why it will fix it for a while--until the memory runs down again. That's how java (the language the OS is written in) works.

Follow my instructions in the link that Troy posted and you should be fixed up. Also, I recommend getting a media card (if you don't already have one) and moving all your pictures, etc. to it.

If you do a simple search here your problem is well documented and discussed endlessly.

The link I provided above is the fix.

It is a memory leak. As in memory disappears.

As I mentioned I do have a media card, all my emails stay intact though.
They are never deleted when this happens

There is truly not much more to offer other than the solution. If you really want to learn about memory leaks I can write something up. They exist in just about all electronics that store data.

lena_epchtein 08-27-2008 01:11 AM

I am asking because the link you posted mentions deletion of emails which I am not having and says nothing about closing bbm conversations which I am experiencing.
That adds to my concern that my problem may be caused by something else.

I have deleted things off of my blackberry and now have 10652806 bytes of free memory. Assuming I don't install any new applications and I keep none of my media on my device should 10mb be enough to store my call logs and text messages?

TroyDBrown 08-27-2008 01:15 AM

I recommend at least 13MB. That document covers all potential issues. Your call logs and text messages take up very little memory. When your device runs low it will start deleting them to get more memory.

If you don't want to deal with this again that How To is the answer.

This is not a memory issue

My BB does the same thing and it has become more and more frequent. I have a practically empty card on mine.

Out of nowhere my BB just freezes gives me an hour glass. Then, when I check back my entire call history and all my texts are deleted. Please, do not offer memory solutions because they are not applicable.

The MEDIA card has NOTHING to do with the amount of MEMORY available to the device.

The MEDIA card is for storing MEDIA.

This is a MEMORY issue. If you have less than 12 000 000 free, the device will delete messages and call logs.

dankarlinski 11-09-2008 08:16 AM

ok. ill make it simple for everyone here....

all electronics that store information on them use internal memory. when that memory is full, the OS will delete un-needed memory being stored to conserve free space. (on a berry, the OS and EMAIL have priority which is a reason why email isnt deleted).

some devices have software issues that cause memory to be used and not cleared for re-use. this is a MEMORY LEAK.

if anything is being deleted and you have less than 12MB of free space, you need to close programs. if there is nothing but basic system stuff open (mmessages, the browser in the background, homescreen) and you stil have this issue, move the pictures/videos/music to a media card (after all, they are media.)

if you dont have this stuff on your phone, then Delete some programs using OPTIONS>ADVANCED>APPLICATIONS

reboot, and hopefully youll be fine.

ALWAYS KEEP UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST OS AS RIM FIXES ALOT OF THESE BUGS IN RELEASES.

the newest OS for all the newer phones (curve, pearl, 8800, and bold too i believe) is 4.5.x.x the links are found at the top of the parent forum of this post. follow the directions there to install.

You gotta love a post like this.

I agree John! Wow that is just classic. I hate trying to help people like this that already have their mind made up what the problem is and won't work with you to fix the issue.

Just in an attempt to give you some insight on this.

Why is my BlackBerry losing its call logs or message logs? - BlackBerryFAQ

crblount 11-12-2008 04:19 PM

I have been having the same problem, but I also lose e-mail messages (can't seem to keep more than 4 or 5 at a time before they start to disappear). I check my memory several times a day, and it never goes below 21,000,000 bytes free. I have upgraded the operating system four times over the past year and have always had the same problem. Could it be possible that there is something else causing this other than lack of memory?
