Help please! My TMO Curve drops UMA calls consistently....

I have a TMO curve that I switched from the Pearl to get away from low signals at my desk. My Wireless router works well and my computers run pretty fast.

The Curve on UMA always drops calls when sitting at my desk...the signal hever gets more than 1 bar......and the distance from the router is 15 feet as it is on the other side of an Office in the home wall.

It works well when switching to Regular cell.

Is there any setting that I can check? I wanted to have some info before I even tried to call Tech support at TMO.

Thank you

Elliot

Two questions do you have QoS configured on the router and also are you using Bluetooth?

elazarus 12-06-2007 02:11 PM

Curve UMA

Thank you for replying.

The Bluetooth usually stays on so when I get in the car it no only switches to GPRS but switches to the Bluetooth in my car.

I have not changed any settings in my router as I was not aware of anything in the set-up that mentioned it. I just checked the router settings and there is no Qos link on the NAV of my Netgear 824

Is the Bluetooth interfering with the UMA?

Regards

Elliot

If you are using the Bluetooth, as in using an earbud or something while on UMA that may cause it.

what firmware do you have on the 8320? I've noticed that the 4.2.2.180 seems to be a little more reliable than the original FW.

elazarus 12-06-2007 04:18 PM

BT etc

I have had the latest firmware v4.2.2.180 since the first 2 days that I had the phone.

The Bluetooth was always on (until 10 minutes ago) as is the Mobile Network and Wi-Fi.....I will try to use Wi-Fi without BT....but shutting Mobile network off may create a problem when I forget to turn it back on....;)

As for the Qos.....if my Netgear WPN 824 does not have that option, will it affect the signal?

Thank you

Elliot

QoS can be set to give the data packets from your phone priority over other traffic thus stopping dropped calls. Let me know how its going.

Uma Settings

Linksys Tech Support made the following recommendations:

BEACON = 50

FRAGMENTATION THRESHOLD = 2304

RTS THRESHOLD= 2304

CHANNEL =3

Try it. My connections have been rock solid ever since.

Bluetooth

I shut off the Blue tooth and so far I had 2 long calls from the same location without a drop.

No where in the setup for the Netgear WPN 824 is there a setting for the QOS and I stupidly thought that this was the highest grade before moving into the N-routers.....

Will the N-draft make a difference in the TMO Blackberry as well as wi-fi computing?

Thank you all

Elliot

"N" is worse for UMA.

TroyDBrown 12-07-2007 01:55 AM

I am glad you have been able to make two long calls without a disconnect. I would avoid an N network for now. It has caused many issues.

Agree, I had to get rid of my Pre-N belkin router and replace it with Tmo linksys router.

pyrosee 12-07-2007 03:09 AM

ya I got have a dusty WRT-300N in favor of a t-mo linksys router.

You could always try and DMZ the curve by IP if you have no other advanced settings on that router, or you cannot figure out how to forward the ports.
DMZ or forward to your blackberry's IP. However that may change if you are on DHCP but it's a good test. To get ur blackberry's IP go to options>status.
I would also make sure that you are in a mixed mode b/g. I tried to get my curve to connect UMA when I had it in N mode, and I got exactly what you are describing.

TMO Curve on UMA

I can't tell you why.......but for the past 2 days with the Bluetooth on or off I am showing 3 bars above the "UMA" for the first time in 2 months that I have the 83XX....

Last week it helped when suggested here that I turn off the BT when on UMA...but of course I forgot to turn it on when getting into the car....

Today I was on the phone and no dropped calls with BT on...go figure.

Thank you

Elliot

Are you sure that you were on UMA today. It was down a lot today.

elazarus 12-10-2007 01:40 AM

Uma

Throughout the day when at my desk I looked and it said UMA....obviously when I am in the car it switches to EDGE....but right now it is UMA and 3 bars.......

Of course, it is possible that it was 3 bars to my router, which is still a first, and the system could be down.....

Elliot

TroyDBrown 12-10-2007 01:44 AM

It would have said EDGE if you were experiencing the issue. I am glad it is clearing up for you.

John Clark 12-10-2007 01:45 AM

A few had UMA throughout the day. However, many lost it between 4 and 9PM PST.

HaTaX 12-10-2007 02:41 AM

I am using a Linksys 300N as well with the dd-wrt firmware on it. And my UMA connections are always solid even with bluetooth turned on, as long as I don't have an active bluetooth headset connection.

elazarus 12-10-2007 12:50 PM

Uma....

Sometimes your luck runs out.....

Today I am showing T-Mobile Netgear as the newtwork below the time and in the upper right instead of UMA I have dear old EDGE....

I guess the UMA is down in my neck of the woods.....

Elliot
