BOLD no data olan, but internet via wifi isn't working
Ok, here's the details.
My cousin has an AT&T bold. Had it for like 4 months. Bought it without the data plan (he's running the original AT&T OS). Since he works from home he figured forget the data plan. So he was using the web via wifi, with no problems at all. Later down the line, he decieded to add the blackberry plan, for like 3 weeks. Then got ride of the plan when he decided, he doesn't need to be paying for it. Since then, his internet browser via wifi does not work anymore. It will connect sporadically, like normally the first attempt, after that, it gets the message "unable to connect to server" or some message of that sort. here's what I tried. Made sure the "hotspot browser" was the default. Loaded him on .266 software Wiped the device. Removed the service books completely. Loaded on a different set of service books via DM. Of course, re-added his wifi network. Cleared out is APN settings (removed the user and password). Tried using the device without the SIM. Nothing improved the situation. Now, I just add, the wifi box under manage connections doesn't have a green check, just a line over it. Also should add the wifi icon is greyed out, which i heard is normal cause it will only be bold if it is connected to the blackberry network. So what am I missing? Is AT&T blocking the hotspot browser? That's what it feels like considering it normally connects the first attempt, after that, nothing! |

Odd, considering my bold connects to the wifi and works just fine without a SIM card. There is a wifi srvice book for the browser, not sure if that matters (I'm not really inclined to make trouble for myself to test it by deleting) |
Did you try a search or the FAQ? Not sure if this will help or not. BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ

That's why I tried some of the stuff I found out. Anyway, my cousin lives 2 hours away. It's not a big deal, I was visiting for a few days. Back home now. Just really bothered that I couldn't figure it out. Everything worked fine until he got the data plan and took it off. I just find it awkward too that it does the same thing even without a SIM! Strange too that it will work the first attempt, then won't connect. Which is why I'm curious if this has to do with AT&T. |

I'm not 100% but I don't think you need the hotspot browser for wifi, if it is connected to his home wifi then the browser will find it and connect, I use wifi a lot and never have used the hotspot browser, I don't even know what that is for to be honest. Sometimes I cannot get the wifi to connect I simply do a battery pull and it works fine after that. BlackBerry's do sometimes have a mind of their own though. |
ur problem is with the wifi connection on bold
goto wifi options on bold delete ur all wifi connections search and make a new wifi conn when asked enter ur security key and connect if still not able to connect check if both wep key# nos on bold and router are same, there are 4 keys in total and if connected succesfully the ssid name will always be there in green in front of wifi in manage connections |
Make sure the TCP settings are correct. For AT&T:
APN: WAP.CINGULAR User Name: wap.CINGULARGPRS.COM Password: CINGULAR1 |

I don't think he needs to reset his WAP setting, does he? :-? |

I've had the problem with my Bold not connecting to wifi and saw a lot of posts saying you have to have a data connection before the wifi will work and I can tell you now that this is incorrect.
I stumbled on the solution as to why my BB had not been able to get out of the 'greyed out wifi' icon. So far, I have not seen a single post anywhere that details this issue (not to say there is'nt one!) Here is how I found my way through:- Go to 'Manage Connections' > Setup Wifi network > Next > Scan for networks (in my case I had to put in the WEP settings of my home router - once input, as with most devices, you don't need to put them in again if you are running WEP on the network) Select your desired network. THEN - and he is the thing that was stopping me: You have to select 'WIFI HOTSPOT LOGIN'. I never selected this in the past and it was this that was causing me to not get the bright Wifi icon! You will see the Blackberry name/logo, then ' Your BB device is now connected to the internet'. Wifi works with or without a data plan or SIM card, posters to the contrary take note! Another point is the Blackberry browser works whether you have the phone connected on wireless or wifi regardless. I just confirmed that one! Happy BB surfing on wifi! |
You really need to be careful that data is actually going via WiFi and not via the device's data path. Have seen several posts about users thinking they are using WiFi, but all of a sudden they have a huge data bill.
Just be sure data is off or blocked and that route isn't being used. |
i would recheck your wifi, i tried this and it didnt work for me
