Rogers Wireless & UMA not working on 1 device
 
I posted this on the original update thread but realized it may be best served as it's own thread.

I have upgraded to 9700 devices both connecting to the Rogers Wireless network.

On the first 9700 the upgrade activated the UMA service and UMA is working correctly.

On the second 9700 the upgrade activated the ability for UMA however the UMA is not working, in fact when I switched the device to Wi-Fi Only, the device switched to "OFF" versus "UMA".

Can anyone shed some light on why this device is not connecting to UMA, while it *IS* connected to Wi-Fi.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Phil, the only thing I can think of is doing a clean wipe of the phone.

I installed the latest OS Hybrid and did a compelte wipe (bringing up the 507 error screen) and then installed the OS and UMA came up right away.

I'd think something configuration wise is causing the issue.

I was about to reply in the other thread but am glad you split your issue out, definitely this is a head-scratcher.

Now, you stated twice that both the 9700's are running on Rogers and OS .862, but you implied (but did not outright say) that both 9700's are Rogers-branded 9700's (as opposed to one being an unlocked T-Mo/AT&T or an unbranded (RIM) 9700. Let's start there: are they both Rogers-branded 9700's?

What I'm reading across several boards/forums is that [for non-engineering screen work-arounds], that it has to be Rogers 9700's using .862 on Rogers' Network. I have not (just what I read, mind you), seen any other combo's work -- other than that accomplished using engineering screens -- and who wants to do that after every reboot?

Both Blackberries are Rogers-branded 9700's and both are still locked to the Rogers Wireless network.

OK. Definitely a head-scratcher then. Cooper has a good suggestion but I'm trying to think if there is anything to try before that point. I do OS upgrades all the time, so re-registering / re-installing and moving icons around etc., has become second nature to me now, but for many it's not pleasant.

I'd compare Service Books next, and/or just resend them. I don't see any likely culprit service books but since re-sending only takes a few moments, no harm really.

As a side note, I have both an 8900 and 9700 in the house, and have noticed that the 9700 is not "as stable" keeping connected to UMA as the 8900 is (EDGE vs. 3G) -- but you would think two 9700's would be virtually identical in behavior, good or bad.

The fact that the 2nd 9700 connects to Wifi (but just not UMA) at all eliminates most router-related / MAC-related suggestions I might have.

Any other routers or wifi networks you can test on? (local Starbucks, friend's house, etc.).

Actually, I have 2 Wi-Fi networks running through the house. There is a Rogers Portable Internet Wi-Fi and a Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Wi-Fi running, the UMA does not work on the 9700 (Unit 2) on either of them.

However, just today the 9700 (Unit 1) is no longer connecting to UMA, I'm only getting 3G vs UMA connection.

Well, I guess I am stumped.

As another side note, I have found that at times I can't connect to UMA either, even though I am 2 feet away from the router. Those times are somewhat rare; overall it's been pretty good at switching modes from 3G only to 3G/Wifi, to UMA/Wifi -- but there is still the odd time that it just won't do UMA even after a router reset, wifi off/on or battery pull. Yet, when I check later, it's connected as if nothing were the matter.

I hope you figure it out, keep us informed.

PS - if you switch 9700 #2 to EDGE (2G only) rather than 3G or 2G & 3G, does it fare any better? More of a curiosity point, certainly not acceptable, but may shed light somewhere.

Tried a full wipe to the 507 screen and re-install, unfortunately still not UMA on either phones now.

I guess I'll wait for the next O/S to see if they improve on UMA connectivity?

So now, in a weird turn of events.

Blackberry 9700 (#2) is now connecting to UMA all of a sudden, while now Blackberry 9700 (#1) is not. :S

Any know if it's the O/S for sure?

Is the router/access point they are connecting to limiting the number of devices it allows to connect at any one time?

Does wi-fi work on the non-UMA phone?

Both phones are connecting to Wi-Fi for data services, it's just Voice Services that the issue is. There is no limit on the number of devices connecting to either of the access points.

Just a thought here. I notice that my 9700 USUALLY connects to UMA without issues at my home yet about 10% of the time it just shows 3G. Usually simply powering off the Bold (not even a battery pull) and powering on establishes the UMA.

What I have noticed but not proven is that when my internet connection is being heavily used (for downloads), there seems to be more of a problem connecting to UMA. The downloads would be on a wired PC (not over the wifi) but still on the same internet connection. Is there some initial UMA handshaking going on that verifies a certain bandwidth being available? Perhaps the OP one Bold is taking over the connection on initial connection.

Like I said...just a thought.

Another method for testing would be on different wireless routers.

Maybe for some reason it's not allowing the UMA connection to establish (although it obviously did work on one, so that is probably unlikely)

I've noticed at work, UMA is almost always on, at home it's on almost the whole time.

Some places I go out to have wi-fi access and it will switch back and fourth.

I would say overall for me UMA works quite well and almost always establishes.

I dont know if BIS/BES makes a difference. I run on a BES.

Both phones are now connecting to UMA on their own.

I also noticed that when I was at the SJA Office it connected to UMA.

I have 2 different routers at home and the issues was not dependent on the router being used (both routers had the same issue).

I think it's the OS itself.

i had a 8900 with UMA, and upgraded to the 9700 and realized it didn't have UMA, its running, v5.0.0743 and connects to wifi. i asked my dealer, about that and he said the 9700 didn't support UMA, is this something new on diff firmware? it is a rogers branded phone on the rogers network .. if its somthing i can fix that would be awesome i miss UMA

5.0.0.862 supports UMA on Rogers phones within the Rogers Wireless Network. I do not know if it works on unbranded phones or phones unlocked with the Fido Network.

5.0.0.862 and UMA is unstable on my 9700, I have old curves at work 8320's and they connected to the UMA with no problems, my phone goes for a while and then disconnects but won't reconnect on its own.

I suspect, as others of you have, that the OS (rather, the .cod's that affect UMA) on the 9700's simply have to "mature" (get tweaked/adjusted/optimized by RIM &/or the carriers).

We have two BB's in the household, an 8900 that is almost always on UMA if connected to the Wifi network, and my 9700 that is probably off and on UMA half the time even though connected to the network fine (white wifi badge). UMA has been available for EDGE devices like the 8900, Pearl Flip, etc. for a while now, whereas (as far as I know), it hasn't been around as long for the 3G devices. Not sure about T-Mobile, but as everyone in the thread knows, 3G BB's on Rogers, in particular the 9700, becoming UMA capable is something relatively new.

For now I'm satisfied with a 50% UMA connect ratio, mostly because I haven't signed up for Rogers TalkSpot and... well, I don't get or make very many calls for the most part. But I have a capability I never had before. I hope/anticipate both improvements in the OS with future leaks/releases and improvement on Rogers's backend in upcoming months.

well i updated, wifi connects fine, will it tell me its on UMA itselft or do i just guess? if it does tell u like my 8900 did, is there a way to force UMA when wifi is connnected?? thanks

have tried many battery pulls, connects to wifi fine, and still wont connect to UMA :(

i tried a battery pull this morning, connected to the wifi, and BOOM str8 to UMA lol weird, but it finally worked :)

sorry for all this, but is there a way to have it stay longer than 20 min? or do i just enjoy that it happens once and while lol
