how does one enable GPS?

Hello.
Stupid question about Pearl 9105; how does one enable GPS?
I have "location on" set in advanced settings in GPS, but all mapping/tracking applications I tried report no GPS; only if I go into GPS Tool (3rd party app that shows GPS information, I installed it to debug the issue) it says that it's enabling GPS, and GPS starts working for all other apps.
How can I force turn it on without using GPS tool?

If you have "location services" set to "on", then GPS is on. To get a GPS signal, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. It can take 20 minutes or longer.

What map applications are you using?
