Do you have a blackberry data plan active on the device? That's what I'm thinking.... Blackberry/RIM policy is to require blackberry data service in order to upgrade to 5.0. There are work arounds posted on the forum which you'll be able to find that will enable you to do it without a data plan (if that is the problem).

do you mean register my device on my Company Contact .. ??

It means exactly what I wrote.

If you are using blackberry branded apps such as BBM, then you have a blackberry data plan (blackberry data service), and my guess was wrong.

Do you have a BB 9000 as in your post or an 8900 as in your profile?

Can't you go further? What happens when you click main menu? Does it just take you back to the desktop manager home?

Are you sure there is an upgrade available? When you use desktop manager to do an automatic update, it uses the OS version from your carrier? Is that what you already have on the device?

Take a look at the latest OS thread at the top of the forum corresponding to your device model. Compare the latest version to what you have. If it is newer and you want to use it, follow the instructions in the post to install it.

Worst case, download the OS software, install it on the computer, and use apploader. In fact, some people prefer that method anyway.

I was able to update my Bold 9000 to OS 5.0 and I DO NOT have a blackberry data plan.

I am on a family plan currently and have one Iphone line which we pay data for. For the remaining three lines, I have a Family Unlimited Data Plan ($10 for all lines). Although my BB works and I can surf the web, I do not have push email and have had problems with certain apps that 'push' notifications (Facebook).

That being said, I have all my emails forwarded to my Gmail account and have downloaded the Gmail app for BB. Aside from that, I use Opera to do all of my web surfing and haven't had any issues thus far.

Its not perfect but it works well. This is an old plan and if I were to go into an AT&T store for a new phone I would be required to add a data plan specifically for my line. So for now I am stuck paying retail for my devices or buying them second hand...
