Battery pull
 

I got conflicting advice on battery pulls: shall i do it with the phone OFF or ON ? Does it make a difference ? If so, how ?

It does not matter. Seriously it doesn't. When you "turn off" the BlackBerry, it is still "on" its just in standby mode to conserve some battery, so pulling the battery either "on" or "off" doesn't matter.

I've been pulling it with the device "on" for years and have not had a single issue.

There is also software that does a good job with this, called QuickPull. For most reboots QuickPull will fix your problems and you donxxx8217;t have to remove your battery lid. The only time I remove my battery is when QuickPull does not fix it than you have to remove the battery.

Battery pull: With the device on, pull the battery for about 30 seconds, reinsert the battery and let the device reboot. This flushes the memory and fixes many problems.

Pulling the battery with the power on risks damaging the device IMO. Maybe small risk, but the risk is still there.

Rileyrg, could you explain the risk to me please?

The same risk when unplugging anything electrical with the device still on. Surges caused by non uniform contact displacements and "jitter" as the contacts separate/reconnect.

Would you just unplug your PC? Or would you think shutting it down first is a better idea?

I've been pulling the battery with the device powered on for years and have NEVER damaged a device.

Rileyrg, understand your explanation. However, the likelihood of that happening is about the same as seeing a haley's comet. It could happen, but chances are you'll never see it.

Like everyone else here, been pulling the battery forever, and besides, the BlackBerry is never really "off", so even then your theory is still likely.

I would say you would have a bigger chance of a surge placing the battery back in not removing it. The only thing that over time you will hurt is the contacts. Some rubbing Alcohol can sometimes fix that by cleaning the contacts.

Pulling the battery hundreds of times is certainly not necessary IMO and I haven't. Quickpull does the same job for me.

But, IMO, pulling the battery repeatedly is sure to wear the phone at the very least.

And I did say the chance of damage was low. I just dont, personally, see the reason. At the end of the day, the back is on for a reason and constantly opening, removing the battery and replacing is not good for the phone.

I have been doing battery pulls for years and never thought about the risk of damaging the unit or the battery itself. I have tried the Quick Pull program but have not had much luck with it. When I go to the menu to adjust the settings I find it very difficult to navigate and select the option I want. Seems to slow down the device also.

You press one icon and confirm to reboot.

I disagree that QuickPull slows your device down. The program only runs when you open it. After it reboots your phone it’s not opens so it should not have anything to do with slowing your phone down. It works great, for a free program. I go from 4Mg or so to over 30 after I use QuickPull.

When I open Quick Pull (free version), the menu lags horribly and then an error message pops up. When it works, it's great and allows me to leave the battery in the device while clearing the memory. But most often, I cannot navigate in the program to set up a schedule of pulls or to even manually tell it to run one. So that's what I mean when I said it slows everything down.

Perhaps I should try the paid version? Any thoughts?

I use the free one. And its one press of the installed icon followed by a confirm.

Try and change your compatibility mode.

Thanks a lot for that advice! I turned compatability mode OFF (not sure why it was on) and it works flawlessly now. In the future, should it be OFF for all apps?

It depends on the app. On some apps you will have to play with it.
