OS: 8900 4.6.1.317/4.6.1.206 (English + Multi Language)
Software For BlackBerry® Curve (TM) 8900 smartphone
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.1.317 (English + Multilanguage) Package Version: 4.6.1.317 Consisting of: Applications: 4.6.1.206 Software Platform: 4.2.0.102 File name: 8900M_PBr4.6.1_rel317_PL4.2.0.102_A4.6.1.206.exe File size: 122.34MB Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld. Downlaod Here: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...223C61B1B5AB89 Instructions to install on ANY 8900 from ANY CARRIER. 1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded. 2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." 3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file. The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device. Sheesh.
|
Install was nice and easy. I did delete the browser cache, then changed the theme to one of the originals. I also was lucky cause when I plugged the BB to the laptop the autoback up ran. So this time I had to backfiles in case of a power outage or other problems. Aloha!
|
Downloading it right now.. I had almost decided to go back to .174 and .206 was released.. awesome find "C_X" !!!
|
downloaded / installed no problems.
|
Downloading as I type.
|
Excellent, thanks!
|
Wuhu! I just love new releases of BB OSes. Downloading right now. Official BB servers sucks, because it's downloading so slow from them...
|
just updated, at the first sight I see more free memory, before around 120.64MB now 129.38MB...
|
Wow, that was quick. There's nothing on this in the beta forum is there?
|
Thought maybe the fact that it was my carrier might have meant I could do wireless OS update... The answer was no...
|
Downloaded and installed find. Didn't mind my customer theme being active either.

Downloading. The last OS (4.6.1.199) wasn't so good on battery life.

Easy upgrade question
I am using BES; when upgrading to new OS after installing enterprise activation start automatically. Will this end up giving duplicates in calendar, address, etc. If so how do I get around this? Thanks

I installed it last night, and so far so good. Definitely an increase in memory. I am around 150mbs with all of my applications installed. I can't really comment on battery life at this point, because I haven't been running it long enough to determine. I am at 100% after almost two hours off the charger, 20-25 SMS, 20 minutes of browsing, and one quick phone call.
|
I'm gonna try this. I'm still on the .114 lol
|
quick q, does multi-lang include east asian languages, specifically traditional chinese? I was able to get chinese working on my 8700c a million years ago but the 8700g I couldn't and since my 8900 will arrive tomorrow, does it support trad. chinese out of the box?
|
Looks to be working ok.
Had to wipe my BB after the first install. Should have followed directions more closely, I delete the device.xml not the vendor.xml . Instructions are for wimps :) |
So far so good. I've noticed a faster response time, more memory, better battery life and definately a better wifi connection..
|
Battery life is rock solid on this one. I had .199 before this and it sucked for battery life. I dont think i will upgrade again until there is an official Rogers release.
|
just installed it and some of my application icons are missing, but they show in the desktop manager. I.e. MSN, general message folder, facebook. My basic today theme isn't working either.
Edit: Was able to fix it. I wiped the phone and restored my backup (i always do a backup before i install a new OS, first time I actually needed it). all my programs, icons, and links are working now. |
I also had to wipe the handheld to get it to work. That was a little weird, because with the other OS's I didn't do that.
|
updated brand new 8900. installed fb 1.5, slacker, beejive and everything seems ok so far
my custom today theme DOES NOT work...(n) not sure why |
Upgraded yesterday and everything is working well. More memory and less lag between tasks. Good OS so far. Battery life seem sto be OK. Well find out more today.
|
Here are some fairly straightforward questions;
1. WHY do I have to come on to a Forum to find out how to upgrade my phone? 2. WHY doesn't the stupid thing just upgrade automatically? 3. WHY is the process so needlessly complicated? 4. WHY did my phone get a 'Fatal Error' when I tried to upgrade through the Desktop Software? 5. WHY is this possibly the worst customer support I have ever come across? 6. WHY should I not throw the bloody phone straight out of the window and go and get myself an i-phone? Yours angrily! |
Thanks
I converted to a HTC Touch Pro for the past 6 months thinking I want more freedom but couldn't handle the Windows Mobile OS and all it's baggage so I got myself a 8900...installed this latest software, it works like a charm, thanks for sharing.
RIM should post all these updates for everyone and easy to find, there should be an easier flow that takes user to a Carrier's latest tested and certified build and the most latest version available for the device. Also I agree with the last comment above, Why can't RIM make a small app on the device that uses connected computer's internet and finds new software for the device and installs (by downloading it on the PC in a temp folder etc and installing it then deleting the temp folder). Users shouldn't need to go through desktop manager and all the options. Life would be a bit easier, I can find new software and install it using any PC anywhere without having to install DM. |
updated last night and almost everything is okay.
the one thing that is odd, my manage email won't let me connect. it tells me my session has expired, to close and try again, which doesn't work, btw. not a huge thing because I can use my pc to resend service books and rearrange email addresses much easier, just the principle of the thing. |
so anyone using a Plazmic today theme? My cal events dont show up after installing this build and restoring my cal from back up. :?

Is it just me? Everytime that I update the OS on the handheld, the Email Options/ Email Settings/ Download Images Automatically changes from No to Yes (without notification). And it always takes me a day or two to rediscover this.
I'm getting more spam because of this.... Grrrr. This happened in the switch from 4.6.1.168 to 4.6.1.199. I haven't tested it for the latest .206 yet. |

Installed it and so far OK. Battery life seems OK. |
just going back a bit, the software isn't necessarily controlled by RIM but by the carriers themselves. That's why your Orange BB won't update to a TMO software release unless you "hack" it by deleting the vendor.xml file.

1. You dont have to, if you wait for the official release, then you wont have to do much. 2. Because most people will probably NOT care about the updates. 3. Is it really? I beg to differ. Once the new os is installed, the DM pretty much does it for you. 4. Possibly because of the browser cache. Try clearing it. 5. This? You mean your carrier??? 6. iPhone is OK as a toy. So, if you want a toy, go right ahead. Yours truthfully.... |

downloaded and installed, all ok for now...

Official releases by one's own carrier are clearly no more or less good/stable/bugfree/whatnot than official releases by any other carrier. I'm not too sure why people would discriminate. Before this release if I had waited for official releases, I'd be charging my battery about every 4 hours (not strictly true).
It would be nice if the carriers sent out a notification when they make new official releases, though. It seems only techy types update ANY phone firmware (except for the iPhone, which is very easy to update/be notified of updates (I have an iPod touch)) |
I am finding that the battery life like .199 is not as good as .176, and possible even worse than .199 for me anyway. It depends on what I am doing, though. I need to give it a shot with just normal usage.

I'm also having issues with battery life. Went from 90% to 20% overnight. I didn't have this problem with 199 or prior OSs |
I just did the upgrade. All apps are working fine, calender is good, and everything is running smoothly!
I am noticing that it is quicker and "snappier" than 114. I have no idea about the battery yet, but if I see anything detrimental, I will post it. |
I have been running this OS for a few days now and after a full day of use 12hrs. With 7 phone calls, 50 texts, about 20mins of web and 15mins of mp3 playing. Ive got 90%. Runs rock solid. Havent had a single issue with it yet.
|
Working well for me so far! (y)

For some reason, I stole the CJK.alx and Java folder files for East Asian languages from the .199 update and then added them into the 206 install.. but it doesn't work.. anyone else find this?
|
I am going to stick with this for a while. Everything seems to work the way it is supposed to. I tried OS 5.0 (app version 5.0.0.83) and liked the first impressions, then I started finding my SMS app gone, couldn't receive SMS messages, random error messages when un-holstering, call log not updating. There were more problems, definitely an early version.
4.6.1.317 is definitely staying on my 8900 for now. |
More accurately, the OS is 4.6.1.206
|
It won't work...
I've followed the instructions on the download page and deleted the Vendor XML file. I don't see a file that says Loader.exe and it'll show on my Desktop Manager, but won't actually load onto my phone. Any suggestions?
|
Loader.exe is located in the same place as vendor.xml. If your computer is set to hide known file extensions then it may just say "Loader"
I notice that your profile says 8320. Are you trying to load this to an 8900? |
I had to update my profile, I do have an 8900. Would this loader file be also called the Application loader?
|
Still waiting...
I deleted the Loader Application file and now it's taking forever for my Desktop Manager to check for application updates. Any other suggestions?
|
got rid of the CICAL for the email address, so now all i have left is DEFAULT CAL and FACEBOOK.
I cant seem to find a CICAL for facebook. I removed facebook app and its still there under cal options? when i enter cal events now its entering them as facebook calendar.... =( how can i get the cal to default as my email address and show up in the today theme? |

na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp]BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites And go to the network carriers that services that speaks Tradition Chinese. i.e.: Hong Kong, Taiwan. Basically you need to download firmware in East Asian Languages. It does not matter which carrier you are in, it only matters on the device model u're using. I also write a document in a local forum site on how to use the Multi-Language firmware that could support in Chinese (or other Asian Language) by merging two firmwares together. PM me if you want the details. |

1. For the last 3 firmware changes, I've had problems with backing up the firmware. The last 2 times the problem has been an error backing up the Browser Cache -- which is easily fixed by Clearing the Browser Cache database in the Advanced Backup section of the Desktop Manager.
2. I've successfully upgraded, but the TMO BIS is not working after several attempts to send service books (twice from the my.t-mobile.com web site and once from the Blackberry itself). The service books were reported as successfully sent by the web site and the Blackberry interface -- but none are working. I've battery pulled, I've tried UMA and no UMA. No luck. No service books, and no emails to the BIS addresses show up on the Blackberry. Any suggestions on kick-starting BIS? BES is working and has fully synchronized. |
Do you have any suggestions for difficulty in loading.206 handheld software?

Problem New OS and Antair Spamfilter
After upgrading to new OS on 8900 I had to re-enter all my registration codes to activate my applications. Problem wiht Antair spamfilter. You cannot enter a number in the registration box. My registration number contains a "3" and when you press the alt key and the 3 key nothing happens. If I cut and paste the whole number from the notepad - the 3 still will not show. Therefore I cannot activate my Antair Spamfilter with the new OS.

I've removed the vendor xml file, but don't see a loader.exe file. I do see a loader application file, is this the same thing? Also, it seems like since I've been dealing with this my desktop manager won't recognize that my phone is connected. Any ideas?
|
Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)
Yes, that's Loader.exe. If you have file extensions hidden it will just say "Loader" and it will be an application. Connect the BB and run that file. |
i've tried for two days to download this. No luck. It stops downloading. Haven't gotten past 30%. 3 different computers!
Whats going on?!? |

here are the steps: 1) Options> 2) Advanced Options> 3) Service Book> 4) Now find all email addresses on the list (you will see 2 entries for each email account - for example "joeblow123@yahoo.com" [CMIME] and "joeblow123@yahoo.com [CICAL]" 5) Delete the "...@email.com [CICAL] entries from the list 6) DONE After you delete all the CICAL entries in the advanced options, your device default calendar will be recognized as the default calendar entry. Hope this helps. |
esbe02 - Thanks! I tried this, i deleted all of the CICAL
i ended up with JUST the facebook cal, which i cant remove even after i deleted the facebook app. it just refuses to give up the default cal! |
Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)
You don't delete ALL of the cical service books. You should leave one (not including facebook) to be the default. |
Hey John - I only have 1 CICAL
under cal options I have Facebook, Default cal, default services shows but everytime i enter a new cal event at the top it says "Send using Facebook" i have facebook set to NOT sync my cal. Im gonna wipe and reload at this point i think.....unless there are other suggestions... |
very nice, thanks

|
Finally got it to download. It was slow as hell! (2hrs 48mins). Don't know why. Better than never!
Anyway, I'm still on T-mobileUSA .114. Is this really worth the upgrade? Seems like i've been getting mixed reviews on this .206. Figured I might wait. Anyone jump directly from 114 to 206? |

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I having using .206 for 1 day now and find it that it has much better battery life than .199. I am at 85% after a full charge, sending emails, surfing the web and making a lot of calls. .199 would drain to 30% in one day with the same tasks mentioned above. Also .199 would hang and was sluggish IMO. I am loving the .206. |
Two things first i would like to try this but it would be the first time i have ever done it so is there any thing that i should know before i do. I REALLY don't want to F-up my BB. Second I have had a BB for about 2 1/2 years now and have been reading the forums and i know this is a stupid question but i still don't really know what the difference OS do
thanks P.S. I just bought some apps off of app world should i back up my BB before i do this or will changing my OS not effect my apps |
.206 screwed up all of my calender entries. It turned all of my appointments in to appointmens using the "default calender." Even though my work email was listed as the default, it still only read "default calender" for each appointment and changed the color aswell. I switched back to .168 since i have found it to be the most stable. .199 had shitty battery life.
|
Wow, the sound is so much louder! I got a text and it scared the hell out of me. This build has bluetooth problems. The audio is lower on bluetooth, too low and it actually sounds worse. I might roll it back for that reason alone. That's all I've noticed so far after an hour. Disappointed in that.
|
OK what am i doing wrong i downloaded it to my PC deleted the file vendor.xml file connected BB hit loader went throw the whole thing and nothing i still got my old .114 OS???

Continuation of a bug... or is it a feature?
I have BES plus 9 BIS email accounts on my Blackberry. Starting with .114, I have set the Message Options/ Email Settings/ HTML/Download Images Automatically to "NO" for all accounts. And this setting randomly seems to reset some or all accounts to "Yes" -- not something I want because the HTML images act as spam beacons. Just before the transition from .168 to .206, I carefully set and saved each of the accounts so the HTML/Download Images Automatically was "NO". I did the upgrade, and they were all "YES". I reset them all to "NO" and saved each setting. Then double checked. Today, several, but not all, were showing "YES". What gives? |
There's a BB messenger bug. Hard to explain. Say you highlight someone in BBM, then goto a convo, and then go back to the contact list, the highlight/select feature disappears and it always takes you to the top of the list. Kind of weird.

|
I think I upgraded successfully...
Just upgraded stock Tmo 8900 from .114 to .206 and it only took 25 minutes. Seems awfully fast compared to when I upgraded my 8100 and 8320 which took 45-50 minutes. Should I be concerned?
EDIT: Now I have two Facebook icons, however second one opens the BBbrowser - weird. |

Might be a dumb question, but I'm a new Blackberry user.
I bought mine a few days ago, and had it unlocked. If I upgrade the firmware, will the phone lock itself again? I dont want to pay to get it unlocked again. |
No, the phone can never be locked again. Ever.
