No Boot

I have two Torches from the past; I now have a BB Classic and am keeping the Torches as spares. One works fine, the other appears to have stopped working for no apparent reason. It was last used about a year ago and has been just sitting in a drawer since then. But it's not just not booting - it's doing some very strange things as follows:
- it appeared to do nothing when I tried to turn it on or charge the battery. The red LED came on for a few seconds then went out.
- I put a new, charged battery in, but that made no difference.
- if I left it plugged in, the red LED came on from time to time, but went out again after a few seconds
- I removed the battery and replaced it and then noticed that there was data on the screen, but it was barely visible. It was the "sign in" box, but signing in would not work. Later, after trying to reboot, I could not repeat this last event, no matter what I did.
- so I plugged the device into my Netbook, with Widows 7 and BB Link. It connected, and the BB keyboard lit up. BB Link showed the unit connected, but said that no data could be transferred because link no longer worked with the 9000 series.
- I set it aside for a while, then thought I'll give it another try. I took the battery out, then replaced it and at first the red LED came on for a minute, then the keyboard lit up and the green LED began flashing. I plugged it in to charge it and the green LED continued to flash. As I write, the unit has been plugged in for about 10 minutes; the green light is no longer flashing; but the keyboard is lit up. I am unable to open the screen, and it doesn't even show barely, as before. Just blank.
Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Re: No Boot

Sounds like the screen is damaged or the phone has a software issue.

Try using Desktop manager to reload the OS . Link is just about useless.

Re: No Boot

Desktop Manager is not available for this unit. If I try to download BB Desktop Manager through BB Link, I get "Device is not supported by BB Link". I am unable to download BB Desktop Software from the internet - I found it, but it wont download. I would like to try to set my BB Torch to factory settings but I don't know how in view of the above.

Re: No Boot

I tried the factory reset in BB Link and it would get about 2/3 through the function and then "lose connection". Does it every time. I don't think there is anything more to try.

Re: No Boot

Well, after much experimentation and fooling around, I managed to connect my BB9810 to my Windows 7 PC with BB Desktop Manager (now) installed. I am able to view everything on my BB in Desktop Manager, and other things see to work, but I can't find any option to set Default Settings for the OS (which I still need). Anybody know where, in Desktop Manager, it is?

Tools, Desktop Options

a pop up will open and at the bottom left you will see Restore Default Settings

I have Desktop Manager open, and my BB Torch connectd and I don't see anything about resetting Factory Settings anywhere

Re: No Boot

This may be the problem with Desktop Manager. When I google Desktop Manager, I get it alright, but when I download it, I always get something called BB Desktop Software, which doesn't appear to have any Factory Reset. Is BB Desktop Software the same as BB Desktop Manager? If not, how do I get the latter?

Re: No Boot

I found Factory Settings in BB Desktop Software as follows:
- open Support Tools interface by clicking the question mark
- hover the mouse over Support Resources
- Select Reset to Factory Settings
I did all that, the device reset, but it didn't fix the problem. Only improved things in that the keyboard now lights up each time I press the power button. Still nothing on the screen, so I guess the screen is now toast and the device is useless.

It does sound like you have a hardware issue.

Re: No Boot

It's possible to get a new replacement screen on line, but it's cheaper to just get a new BB 9810 on ebay. However, I already have another older 9810 that works, as back-up to my Classic, so getting another Torch doesn't make sense. It just bothered me that the other wasn't working and wanted to fix it just to do it. Thanks for all your good advice tsac.

Re: No Boot

One thought, If you were going to try to replace the screen you might try and see if any of the contacts that make it work under the cover are dirty or corroded. If the phone does not work and your going to toss it out anyway you have nothing to loose by trying.

I would search the internet for replacement methods or manuals.

Re: No Boot

I thought I would try something like that. Take it apart and see if there are any loose or bad connections, or whatever. I found a very good instructional video on youtube that I'll use for guidance. As you say - nothing to lose. I'll tackle it in due course when I have some spare time. Here is the youtube link:

Re: No Boot

Got it fixed. I reached a dead end, so I sent it to a cellphone repair business called UBREAKIFIX. They reinstalled the OS (which I was unable to do), and now it works. I probably paid more for the repair, mailing, and tax than it would have cost to buy a replacement Blackberry Torch on ebay. Oh well.
