Options

I am a newby where Blackberry is concerned, but with no other device have I found it so difficult to get started. Let me give just one example.
I wanted to explore the symbol (the spanner) called options. From threads here, I gathered I would find submenus like
>options advanced
> applications
etc.

But having clicked on options, what I find is
Module properties
> about
> details
> resources
>CPU
> memory
> application storage
> applications

So how to I get to the "options advanced" rather than the module properties?
I have a 9800 Torch.
I could quote many other examples of differences between what I am told I will get and what in fact appears on my screen...

What exactly do you want to do from the Advanced Options menu?

I want to find out what they are and how I can use theml But why do you not answer my question rather than just post another one?

Then read the manual, or search online. The choices in the options are pretty self explanatory.

Re: Options

Perhaps I should rephrase my question to get a more precise reply than "RTFM", and save me ploughing through the 350 page manual, which admits there are variations between models...

So here goes:
if I click on the spanner, options, I do not find any options, (let alone self-explanatory ones) but merely a list of module properties. How do I change this? I went to the setup menu, but this did not help. Nor did the manual, or the KB article. Part of the problem is that even with the search feature of the manual it is not clear for a newby what to search for. So instead of respondents just pontificating, "RTFM", perhaps they would indicate the appropriate phrase, and try it out for themselves. Thankyou

The issue is we still don't know what you want to do. If you would elaborate on what exactly you want to change in the options, we will be able to help further. Until then, RTFM is the best answer we can give.

Re: Options

There is no ploughing through 350 pages. There is also no need to rephrase. It is difficult to give directions to someone who doesn't know where they are going. dc/dc asked you what you wanted to do/check/investigate, and your response in post #4 pretty much sums it up.

The KB article contains the Option tree for your device and explains how to use Universal Search to target what you may be looking for (Since you didn't/won't explain, it's difficult to tell you where to go). On your homescreen(Upper right corner) is a magnifying glass. Tap it and type one of these into the Headings from the KB article into it. Select and the SubMenu will appear and you can Navigate from there.

Re: Options

OK, I will give a simple example illustrating the problem.

My phone number appears as Unknown in the Phone application

Answer from Torch Manual
If your BlackBerry® smartphone uses a SIM card, try changing the phone number on your SIM card to change how your phone number appears in the Phone application.

On the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
Click Device > Advanced System Settings > SIM Card.
Highlight the phone number.
Press the Menu key > Edit SIM Phone Number.
Type your phone number.
Click OK.

However, if I click on the spanner, options, I do not find any choices, (let alone self-explanatory ones) but merely a list of module properties. How do I change this so that I get: Device > Advanced System Settings > SIM Card?

Re: Options

Can you open BBM and type "myver" without the quotes and space and then post what it says.

You cannot change your outgoing number by changing the settings in the SIM/Phone Options. You can broadcast your ID (Your number) or not (Private Name/Private Number).

Also, you can't click on the spanner (options) icon from within a folder. You have to press the Menu Key (BB Key) and then choose Options, and bearing in mind your options will change depending on where you are accessing them from.

Can you post screen shots of what you are seeing? The icon you are clicking, etc?

Re: Options

My last message totally disappeared.. why? So I try again, writing and posting from MS Word. My very first message stated I had a 9800 Torch.
My problem evidently arose because, as ZombieBerry put it , "you can't click on the spanner (options) icon from within a folder. You have to press the Menu Key (BB Key) and then choose Options, and bearing in mind your options will change depending on where you are accessing them from."

Not very self-evident!
This also conflicts with the quote from the 9800 Manual:
Answer from Torch Manual
If your BlackBerry® smartphone uses a SIM card, try changing the phone number on your SIM card to change how your phone number appears in the Phone application.

On the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
Click Device > Advanced System Settings > SIM Card.
Highlight the phone number.
Press the Menu key > Edit SIM Phone Number.
Type your phone number.
Click OK.

As I said, if click on the Options icon from the home screen I get a different screen according to what folder I had been using previously. Currently I get a screen with a title "Options", starting with Sounds and Ring Tones.
When I first wrote, I got a screen with a title "module properties". I do not know from which folder or application this came.
If I now start from the phone icon, it initially brings up a screen headed by "My Number:Unknown Number". On clicking the BB key, I get a heading "Call Management", with a list starting with "In-call Settings"
I do not have an icon called DEVICE. But if I start with the APPS icon, the BB then brings up Home Screen Preferences.
So my question crystallises to just what screen or folder do I need to call up in order for the options to offer the SIM Card Setting?

Re: Options

Go to the Options icon from the main screen. It should look like a wrench. The same screen where you saw the Sounds and Ringtones option. From there Scroll down and you will see the Device option. Select Device. Then scroll down and select Advanced System Settings. The then scroll down and select SIM Card.
