List of devices that will support OS 5.0

RIM KB17984 lists the devices which "support an upgrade to BlackBerry Device Software 5.0".

This list changed as of Feb 1, 2010...here is the current list:
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8350i smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Bold™ 9000 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Storm™ 9500 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Storm™ 9530 smartphone

This is the old list that was released in October 2009:
  • BlackBerry® Pearl™ Flip 8200 series smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8350i smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Bold™ 9000 smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Storm™ 9500 series smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Tour™ 9630 smartphones

The 8200 Flip series and the 8330 are no longer on the new list.

Devices released with 5.0 (therefore they are not upgrading to 5.0):
  • BlackBerry® Curve™ 8530 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Storm2™ 9520 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Storm2™ 9550 smartphone
  • BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 smartphone

Thank you Jooolie. Hopefully this will curb the frequent question: "Will my device see 5.0 upgrade?"

EDIT: Didn't the 8530 launch with 5.0? Why would it be in the list as "upgrade to 5.0"?

I consider it a typo, since yes, it did launch with 5.0 (I have one sitting next to me).

Strange that the 82xx and 8330 are not on the list anymore....yet there was an 8330 5.0 release from Boost Mobile, and the 82xx devices are still in 5.0 beta development...Strange

juwaack68 02-02-2010 02:52 PM

Yea, I thought the same thing. It could go either way - the 8330 has been pulled from Sprint and we can't order it anymore (the 8530 is the replacement).... but still to be released from Boost Mobile.....

Also you should add the note:

Quote:

Note: Not all wireless service providers will support BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 on all of the BlackBerry smartphones mentioned, as some wireless service providers will not carry all of these BlackBerry smartphone models, or might choose not to provide BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 for all of their BlackBerry smartphone models. Contact your wireless service provider to determine the availability of BlackBerry Device Software 5.0.

I have it from a reliable source that Sprint will not be releasing 5.0 for its 8330 devices.

In my opinion the 8330 can't handle OS 5. It just bogs it down to much.

** I added the 8530 since it was recently released and has 5.0.

I don't understand..., since the 8530 was initially released with OS 5.0, it really shouldn't be ON that KB list, as candidates for upgrade to 5.

Should it?

Ahhh.... I'm pickin up what you're puttin down. I was reading it (albiet not comprehending) that the list was for devices that will support 5.0, not those that will eventually be upgraded to OS 5.0.

That definitely would explain why the 8530 and even the 9700 were not on the list since they already have it and won't be upgrading to it.

I've updated the first post.

Yep, same with 9550, 9520 - both released with OS 5 installed.

You're killing me, Smalls....

marclile 02-03-2010 06:45 PM

not sure why they would have removed the 8330. i have an 8330 with Sprint and i put 5.0 on it a couple of days ago and everything is working fine

marcmarchany 02-20-2010 11:33 AM

I'd have to disagree, I'm running 5.0 on my 8330 and have for several weeks now. It doesn't bog down at all, it speeds it up a great deal.

The Boost Mobile release has a fairly large memory leak which may require daily or everyother day battery pulls to restore memory but the NathanX hybrids seem to have eliminated that while speeding up the phone even more.

I dropped back to OS 4 for awhile today and was surprised at just how much slower the things were and how much is missing that I've learned to rely on in OS 5.

I wouldn't be surprised if VZW never released it as they have apparently sold out of 8330s and probably won't get any more but the software is still being developed and more releases will follow the Boost release.

thanks Julie! much needed :)

cyberdyne 02-26-2010 03:53 PM

Is there a reason that the 5.0 upgrade doesnt show in desktop manager as available for the 8520?
Thanks

Noodle22 02-27-2010 12:02 AM

I don't believe there is a official release for it yet. The only 5.0 for the 8520's right now are betas.

And this is for devices built to support 5.0, it does not necessarily mean that they have it yet.

cyberdyne 02-27-2010 04:39 AM

I see, ok, thanks Noodle

Thanks Juwaack68! Just exactly what I am looking for.
