Is there a resource that lists all the .cod files and what they are known to be for?

Probably, I have just never seen an actual document. Most of the cod files are easily figured by the names and having some small knowledge of what is options/applications, etc are installed in OS loads.

Should removing the themes and VAD cause me to not be able to retrieve picture messages? or is that something else? Thanks

newberry52 06-27-2008 07:05 PM

I have been reading this thread for weeks now and finally dared to attempt it. I succeeded in not getting the dreaded white screen but there were no changes to my device. I am taking it a step at a time and think that my problem may be in understanding properly the instructions to remove the "_vendorID" in the Blackberry.alx file. I only removed the first reference but was too scary to remove any others. I came up again with only the BBDimension and TmobileZen themes. So, to be concise, should I have searched for and deleted every _vendorID setting, regardless of the ID/quantity of ID numbers that followed? All is exactly as it was.

John Clark 06-27-2008 07:07 PM

If you want to add more themes, then yes, you need to edit the vendor string just exactly like I describe.

newberry52 06-27-2008 07:44 PM

Ty for your quick response. I am pleased to say that I actually did it without bricking my device! I didn't get all the themes listed in the instructions but a good number of them.

I have deleted as much as I want to delete and now have 21MG free, which is a gain of about 5MG since I have very few 3rd party apps. I have opted for the O2 theme and deleted all others except the necessary BBDimension icon and theme files.

I agree that if you read carefully and follow the directions, it is easy to do. I did it in stages and it worked fine.

You cam delete those other language files but don't delete the preloaded tunes.

What a great thread and so awesome instructions. I've saved them to my computer as well as bookmarked this thread.

I've got a Curve 8310 GSM on Suncom with v4.2.2 on it. I've been trying to find v 4.4 or v4.5 but so far I've only found it for CDMA. I looked through the entire list that's on here and so far no go. Anyone know what GSM carrier has it in English? I understand that it supports bluetooth stereo for video, which v4.2.2 does not.

John Clark 06-28-2008 10:01 PM

Here ya go. Every OS version has English:

Just want to report that I have read every one of these posts now. I had already optimized my device and have to say that John's instructions really are very clear. They may require more than one read to make sure you fully understand them and you need to have some basic knowledge about using a computer.

Using Voice Dialing with my Plantronics 220 can have its frustrating moments and I really hate it when I answer an incoming call using the BT headset and the device reboots. So I decided to delete Voice Dialing. I currently have only the BB Dimension Zen and the O2 themes. After implementing the other changes mentioned in the instructions, I now have over 25MB free. I will see how I like not using VD but even if I reinstall it, I will still have at least 21MB free.

Gotta love it!

goodwyne 06-29-2008 05:19 PM

Outstanding! I've got it installed and I'm pretty happy. So far everything works. Of course, bluetooth still doesn't work for videos, which was my primary motivator for wanting to upgrade. Still, I like the addition of the video camera and voice recorder. Now I just have to drop the themes I don't care for and I'll be finished.

Thanks for the great thread and the additional assistance!

Hi, new BB owner and new to the forums.

I'm giving this a try and wanted to double check:

Can I safely delete: net_rim_bb_medialoader_video_81xx_240x260

from my Verizon 8130 with v4.3.0.97 on it?

Thanks for your help.

John Clark 06-29-2008 06:26 PM

Welcome to the Forums!

You can delete the video cod but it's not really necessary as you can just uncheck the box to not remove it when you run application loader.

TheGreatGazoo 06-29-2008 07:43 PM

Thanks.

Just curious, what does it do?

John Clark 06-29-2008 07:45 PM

I explain it in my post. It's the preloaded video. You don't need it and it takes up almost 2MB of space.

TheGreatGazoo 06-29-2008 08:24 PM

Thanks for your help and the great
"how-to" I was able to free up a ton of space.
