How does BB9790 calculate the car speed?

Hi;

I recently bought BB9790. I opened MAP with no internet connected, I found that here system was informing me the car speed while I did not activate any services from service provider. Is there any feature in device which calculates the speed without any other services?

GPS with some map applications will display your speed.
