Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Hello people.

I have this strange problem,

When I turn on my device (BB 9800 Torch), BB logo shows up for a few seconds, then a white screen comes up also for few seconds and then battery with red cross on it appears on black background.
When I open the slider, the keyboard lighting turns on.
When I press "alt" key I see "alt" shows up at right top corner, I can soft reset the device, but everything else is dead.

The device is new and it worked few days then the problem appears with no reason.
I don't have warrenty because I bought the device abroad.
I also tried new battery (not genuine) and it's the same.

What's the solution for that ?

Thank you very much,

Michael.

Have you inspected the battery contacts for damage, and cleaned them ?

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Sounds like one of those nock off batteries floating around. RIM created smart batteries that are coded with OEM stuff. Nock offs require you to copy this code to the off brand battery they sell. If the nock off goes dead it looses the code from the genuine battery.
Also, that battery and phone are meant for each other.
I tested 2 9800 in my office with 5 of the nock offs.
I have to first use the OEM battery in the phone. Shut it off, do the clone then put it in the BB. It works great. take that same battery and use it in another 9800 and doesnt work. Then go back to the original one and its not working either. I have to start the process all over again.
RIM got smart and started to make smart battereis. We will se more of this in the future. BUT it might back fire if enough people get ticked off at the prices of the batteries or have other issues.

But as to your problem. i can only guess its related.
Not sure if you have OEM batteries or not.

So I can understand that if I'll buy new original battery it also wont work?

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

I wouldn't make that assumption. And a new battery is considerably less expensive than a new phone. Have you inspected the contacts for damage or corrosion/dirt?

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Yeah the contacts are OK.

On both batteries.

Any other suggestions ?

Go into an Orange shop and ask to try one of their batteries. If it works, you have the answer. Otherwise it may be that you bought a defective BlackBerry.

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Well at Orange they don't sell 9800 so they also have no batteries.

I read that BB batteries have a code so I assume that my original battery "lost" that code that is why my device can't accept it.

Is there any way to match my new battery to the device without the original battery ?

If the batteries are fully charged and a battery pull doesn't sort it out it may be time to try upgrading or downgrading your OS.

Well I had that in mind...

There is any tutorial for that so I won't make thing worse ?

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Thank you rambo47 but I tried the first one already.

I receive an error that It cannot connect my device.

The device should be in safe mode or something ?

At BB Desktop Manager I can see the model and S/N of my device but I guess it's not enough for upgrading the software.

Best to backup and then do a complete wipe with JL_Commander. After that a re-install using AppLoader.exe (included in Desktop Manager, accessed via command line) should do the trick.

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

I had the same problem with my Bold 9000 using knock off batteries. These were inexpensive batteries made in China which looked almost, but not quite like genuine RIM batteries. It is very tempting since the price of genuine RIM batteries is so expensive. These batteries are usually sold on line, some by otherwise repuitable vendors. I would almost guarantee that if you obtained a genuine RIM battery, the problem would go away. I said "almost" so I would suggest, as indicated above, that you "borrow" a battery from someone with a torch to see if that cures the problem before shelling out for a new genuine RIM battery.

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Hi again.

Well I followed this guide:How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ

Then this one:
What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe - BlackBerryFAQ

The problem is that Application Loader Wizard won't recognize the device as "USB:UNKNOWN" or "USB:BBPIN" like mentioned in the INSTALLATION steps.

It recognizes the device's PIN and I can't continue the wiping process.
See the picture:

I did everything exactly as written in the guide.

Any ideas ?

Thanks !!

What happens when you click the next button?

Did you try a new OEM battery as many have suggested already?

metalmiller 08-06-2011 11:45 PM

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

After I click "Next" button I receive this window:

I didn't try new OEM battery yet.
I have ordered new one and I'm waiting to receive it.

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

You have to download the handheld software onto your pc, then double-click that file to install in into the BlackBerry Desktop Software for transfer onto your Torch. And don't forget to delete the vendor.XML file!

Re: Battery With Big Red Cross On It

Well to tell you the truth I don't really know what software is installed right now on the Torch cause I cannot turn it on.

I have downloaded this one that supports 9800 device:
https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/D...1561EC0E.node1

I should install it in a certain way to get it into Blackberry Desktop Software ?
I did regular installation as I do for other softwares I install.

By the way...
If I buy a new OEM battery for Torch, how the thing with battery ID works ?
If it's new, it doesn't have any ID (I guess), so how it acquires a new ID ?
How it becomes compatible with my device?
