I'm on the Storm 2 at the moment and it does what I need in a way I like. I had gone to the Nokia Music Xpress for brief while but I didn't like how it dealt with mail. Nokia does have a killer Sat Nav though.

Went to Nokia phones for multimedia capabilities back in the days of the BB 7230. Tried a bunch of different Nokias and did the same thing each time. I tried to make them more "BlackBerry-like". The only rational thing to do was go back to BlackBerry.

When the Palm Pre first came out I left AT&T and my BB Bold 9000 (which I won in a contest right here at BlackBerry Forums!) and went to Sprint. I used Treo smartphones way back before discovering BlackBerrys, and while Palm's execution slacked off terribly, their concept of a conversion device for phone + organizer was revolutionary. Especially because it was geared to the consumer, not the business user as BlackBerrys had been. They had games, other fun apps, and even did email. At the time it was really quite something, marrying the excellent Palm Pilot organizer to a cell phone. But by the time the Treo 650 was the hot model the platform had major stability issues. That's what led me to the BlackBerry 7230 and the 7105t (an all-time favorite of mine). So I had this soft spot in my heart (and probably my head!) for Palm and I bought into the hype of WebOS and the Palm Pre. I lasted just long enough to get my mail-in rebate for the Pre and promptly put it on my shelf. I ran (not walked - ran) to the nearest Sprint store and bought another BlackBerry. My relief was palpable.

More recently I bought the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint. Very interesting device, does tons of stuff, and has a gorgeous screen that looks like a mini plasma tv. Android is fun. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting some cool new app for Android. I loved the skymap and droidsat (for pinpointing the positions of all known satellites). But the Epic was too big go be used/carried comfortably, has releavitely short battery life, and just didn't do email like a BlackBerry. I gave it a good 4 weeks or so before putting it on the shelf next to my Palm Pre and re-activating my BB 9650.

I have no brand loyalty to RIM and BlackBerrys. I continually try the latest thing, and I will probably continue to do so. But BlackBerrys just get it done for me. And while no platform is perfect, nothing else is as good for my needs. Not even close.

Hi rambo47,

Even though I am a BlackBerry fanatic, am always interested to hear about the experiences others have had. BlackBerrys are renowned for e-mail, and since I have several e-mail addresses, it's hard for me to imagine that other phones could handle them any better. You have confirmed my thinking. (y)

I'm happy with my 9650...especially since I stuffed it with OS 6. It's perfect for me. and my 2 daughters aged 18 and 16 ,love theirs. One is away at college and it helps us all stay connected, and my 16 year old, well, if she didnt have her blackberry I wouldn't be nearly as in touch with her a s I am. I'm a scatter brain so my Blackberry helps keep me organized and and at least have a clue what I'm supposed to doing. Thanks BB

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I just bought a Droid X yesterday, and I gotta admit, its a pretty cool device. I've always been a "bells & whistles" type person, and this phone definitely has an abundance of both. I'm also loving the screen size as my eyes continue to fall behind year after year.
But a couple drawbacks are the battery life (sucks) and the typing on a touch screen (sucks worse), but I'm guessing in time I will adapt.
But my heart will stay with my trusty 8900, as I am keeping it for work-related issues and when I need that security blanket called Blackberry. As I've said before, touch screens are toys. I just forgot how much I use to love playing with them.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

None of the choices apply to me. I have done like others here. I have had a BlackBerry since the 950 came out (had the 7730, 7100t, 7105t, 8100 and 8120 after). I have tried the Danger/Sidekick OS and Windows Mobile each time I left BB. Each time I come back due to the battery life and simplicity of the OS although the Sidekick is my 2nd favorite. In fact I just re-extended my contract last Friday to get the Bold 9780 after a disastrous week with an 8120.

I have been forced into Blackberry for years but I can really get work done. I tether it with my laptop via bluetooth... which is AWESOME and on ATT can do phone calls at the same time. Typing of course is the best. I would hate to have to work on the iphone, my wife has one. That said I really wish the apps were better, even the best apps suck compared to BB. I chose the 9700 over the torch because I heard the torch was underpowered... sometimes I wish I had the larger screen. I can't wait for OS 6 for my 9700.

As a comment to my previous note about switching to iPhone - the only reason I would stay is if the new TORCH is as good as it looks and has enough apps

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

It seems I'm just out of phase with BlackBerry. Each time I buy a new non-BlackBerry device because of some spiffing new feature, RIM answers by adding something like it. I wanted a larger screen device, and BB releases the Torch. Since I'm on Sprint I can't use it. Yet. I fully expect a CDMA version, especially considering what a hit the Torch has been for RIM. So now I'm staring at my gorgeous Evo and at the same time bemoaning my loss of push email.

I'm a serial switcher. I've admitted that before, publicly and to myself. I'm also a consumer whore and exactly what these tech companies want. I may not live on the bleeding edge of tech, but I'm pretty close. Rather than get the latest shiny new gadget every time one is released, I find myself waiting for a couple of reviews before leaping into the water. I'd like to say I'm being smart by waiting and reading reviews, but really I'm just using them to convince myself that the decision I already made to buy is the right one. So here I sit, wishing my Evo was a BlackBerry and wishing my BlackBerry Bold had a more Evo-like screen. And dreaming of a Sprint BB Torch.

I feel your pain. While I was not forced into the purchase of my Touch Pro 2, I bought one because I thought having a slide out keyboard could beat the slew of SureType 71xx and 81xx BB's I went through. After 9 months of swapping between 4 devices, I went to my drawer nearly 2 weeks ago and found my 8120, only to have to call T-Mobile the next day and almost cancel my contract to get the 9780 I got last week and love.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I'm still flirting with my HTC Evo, but some troubling things have cropped up.

First, after the last firmware update, me and a lot of other people are noticing that our timezone is randomly changing to some other strange place. Mine has gone to Brasilia and West Africa! I have it set to update automatically from the network, and the fact that my Evo is somehow telling the network that I've changed continents is quite strange. It's easy enough to fix simply by toggling off and back on the "automatic" for timezone. But still, it doesn't fill me with confidence that my Evo is as solid and reliable as my BlackBerrys have all been.

Second, there is a bug in Android's SMS implementation. I have not experience this one but others are fuming over it. Seems that you send a text to one person but it gets delivered to someone else. The message shows on your device as having been properly sent and received, but in point of fact it never got to it's intended recipient. Imagine if a message to Daphne went to Lisa instead!?! That could get messy! By all accounts, Android has made this a relatively low priority fix, leaving those affected out in the cold and wondering who is getting their messages. Most text messages go through to the proper recipient, but every now and then one goes astray. Yet one more reason to question Android's ability to fill a "mission critical" role in personal communication.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

Here's a couple of things my Evo kicks butt at:

1. Web browser. BlackBerry's browser still sucks. Between the Evo's gorgeous 4.3" screen and the superior browser that comes standard, using the web is far more enjoyable on the Evo. I never used it much on my BlackBerry, but now I'm using it much more frequently since it's so easy.

2. Maps. Google maps on the Evo's 4.3" screen is like having a dedicated GPS device in your pocket.

It all comes back to the screen difference. I have compromised on email handling, battery life, and keypad design for that extra screen real estate. I'm still undecided if I will stick with Android/Evo or jump back on BlackBerry. I got another nudge in the Evo's direction recently. The camera. I used the 5MP camera on my Evo on New Year's Eve to get some great pics, and today I recorded my son's wrestling match. Spectacular results all around. While the BlackBerry will take pics and movies, the difference in quality between the Evo and BB is huge.

I have to agree with you on the screen. The battery life is horrible, but having this screen size on my Droid X is a definite deal breaker for me. Using it with the navigator is as close to having a dedicated system as I want.
But I have to admit, BB will probably always have my heart. It's as a reliable a phone as I could ever get or want.

I'm still on the fence about sticking with my Evo or going back to my BlackBerry full time. If Sprint got a version of the Torch it would be a no-brainer. But my Bold's 2.4" screen is just a bit cramped, and my eyes are not what they used to be. Plus a full-screen calendar on the Evo is a thing of beauty. I never really got used to the BlackBerry calendar app.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

MY STORY:

I was a happy BB 8330 Curve user.

In Sept 2101 my contract with VZW came due and the sales rep at the VZW store was ALL ABOUT the Droid(s) and especially the Droid X and just about turned herself inside out talking about what a great platform the Android system was.

She knows that I'm primarily a business function user and I made several statements about my lack of enthusiasm about the touch screen and that frankly I'm not a gadget/ (app) oriented kind of guy.

Still she assured me that the Droid X was not only the future but that it would offer me everything BB was doing and then some.... all for the same price.

Basically she sold me the phone she wanted.

On Dec. 18th 2010, after the 3rd Droid X to fail I refused a 4th "factory refurbished" (aka, used) Droid and demanded they provide me a BB. Each of the three Droid X's were "software failures."

There was a lot of discussion and eventually they relented.

In the 3+ years of owning my BB 8330 I NEVER once experienced a "software failure."

It's a sure sign that there is a lot of "bugs to work out" in a platform that has so many failures. I know of 3 other people who experienced similar failures or just found the Android system learning curve difficult to negotiate.

Since I received my new BB I have had not a single software related issue AND........... I am not dependent on Google

Oh and I don't have to pay for an App that allows me to use word documents, PPT's or excel files.

I could go on but ultimately my observation is that; if you seek a device that is more of a toy/ entertainment center then go to the Androids.

If you are seeking a tool for reliable function, business and no tom foolery stay BB.

Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post.

Yesterday I re-activated my Bold 9650 and placed my Evo gently on the shelf. The relief I felt was palpable. I WANTED to love the Evo and Android. I tried to love it. I gave Android about two months, first with the Samsung Epic 4G, then with the HTC Evo. In the end I found I was trying to do what I always seem to do when I use a non-BlackBerry: I was trying to make it more like a BlackBerry. Well, duh! The solution to my problem is simple. Use a BlackBerry! Again.

Was a BB user for four years, when I found out my year-old 8820 wouldn't be given a useful browser (OS 6) I jumped to iPhone 4. BB is unquestionably a better messaging device - hardware keyboard, streamlined messaging, extensive shortcuts - but iPhone is light years ahead in everything else so it doesn't matter.

If you are tempted by the iPhone Apps, Blackberry's options have become quite robust. I have been recommending the following book to folks

Brilliant Blackberry Apps by Corey Sandler.

Each section goes over great apps that are out there such as:

LinkedIn,
Contacts Cleaner,
Weatherbug,
Skymall,
Time Magazine,
Sports Illustrated,
CNN Money,
Bank of America Mobile,
Google Maps and
Paypal.

^ You'd love the BB Torch as the calendar shines on this particular BB.

I've moved to other platforms before & recently ONLY to return to the BB: iPhone 3GS [5mths] then BB9700 (back again), iPhone 4 [2mths or less] then BB9780, Android Samsung SGS [1WEEK - HATED IT] then back to BB9780. I suffered withdrawal from perfect PIM, proper app integration, shortcuts, (forwarding an SMS, text only, should NEVER be an MMS Android = senseless added cost), most ARCANE file system I've EVER saw, NO SYNC with MAC OS X, NO WAY TO UPDATE FIRMWARE on OSX purely! (no hints it ever will; not even LINUX which is sad really), etc.

Sure we all want:
* Larger screen on beloved Bold lineup, yet I'm sure the majority loves svelte size.
* FASTER CPU with just a bit more RAM! Actually I'd like to see dedicated RAM partitioned ONLY for the core system to use for running apps, separate from installed applications - nothing complex for developers pls.
* File System: RIM give us the ability to delete MULTIPLE files at once by quickly multi-selecting them: Nokia came up with a sweet/simple solution in S60 3rd Ed FP1 on E71: ALT+Select (or something similar)!!!
* BB6 has a FLAW with iTunes sync'd playlists!! I cannot ADD music from my MicroSD to an existing Playlist; WTF!!?? I could do this on BB5 on my 9700 - same MicroSD card too.
* BB MAPS! I'd LOVE to have a "Breadcrumbs" feature!
Turn it on, select an option so that it'll track me until I save & turn it off: saved as a favorite.

I find the WebKit Browser is incredible!! Saving Bookmarks into ANY folder that exists in Bookmarks or creating a folder on the fly while saving a BOOKMARK is STILL unique to his platform. Sure it doesn't like too many tabs open at once (6-10 and you're pushing it) but larger screen size is needed & higher resolution would not hurt.

No ... I'm sticking it out with BB; too many things this beauty offers along with assurance of local sync for those JUST IN CASE the cloud destroys data (something common from Google with many platforms).

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

Well, I switched from my Tour 9630 to a Droid Pro on Nov 14. First, I am not going to bash BB. My BBs did everything they were designed to do and did it right the first time...every time. Maybe I was lucky.

I switched for the following reasons:
-I'm on Verizon and Torch not available...if it had been I might not be posting this!!!
-Faster web browsing
-Touch screen
-larger on-board memory
-faster processor
-more capable/adaptive OS
-WiFi
-flexibility and more choice regarding 3d Party app
-Must sync with Outlook for contacts and calender

I use the Pro for personal and business calls, email, text, etc. It is true, if your coming from a BB to a android phone, it will take some time to get used to. If you are tied to BES don't make a move to android right now...google and the phone manufactures are still trying to figure that one out. There is a corporate sync but it is not par with BES at this point in time. Also, there is no BIS. But, there is two easy ways to get all your email (not corporate) pushed to your phone. Gmail (manditory with an android phone) has a function called "Fetch". Fetch, once setup, performs exactly like BIS...there is no charge for this functionality. The other way, which I use, is to have all three of my POP email accounts forwarded to my gmail account. Gmail then pushes those emails to my Pro as soon as they arrive. It is as fast if not faster than BIS...works great for me. Two of my POP accounts are for business and the other is personal email.

I've seen a couple of comments about getting Outlook contacts and calendars to sync. I use a 3rd party app called gsyncit ($20) that is an Outlook plug-in. Works great, keeps everything sync'd between Outlook and my phone...no issues what so ever.

The querty keyboard (another must for me, I hate virtue keyboards) is pretty good. In someways I prefer it over the 9630's keyboard particularly the way they have numbers arrayed along the top roll of keys.

The difference is web browsing, the speed with which you can multitask and the speed with which "things happen" on the Pro are amazing. Quite frankly it runs circles around any BB I have ever seen...to include the Torch.

Bottom line-If you are tied to BES then an android phone may be a problem when it comes to corporate email sync.

I've been considering it for a long time. In short the following features keep me on BlackBerry:

** Critical features **

1. Calling over WiFi with UMA -- it means (1) that while abroad, I can find a WiFi hotspot and simulate being in the US and send/receive calls for free on my US number and (2) I get reception in my workplace, which has WiFi but no good carrier reception for any US carrier

2. Unlimited international data for +$20/month (still on a fudgy "don't ask don't tell" policy that doesn't state anything clearly but this is what I get). Land in a foreign country, check my e-mail and use Google Maps to get around while all my friends put their sleek iPhones away in terror of roaming charges and switch to paper maps (I cringe at how technologically backward this is -- it's 2011, international flat-monthly-rate access to internet and maps on a phone ought to be a basic world standard already, and only BlackBerries -- well, *some* BlackBerries -- have it).

** Non-critical features **

3. A real keyboard
4. Built-in super bright flashlight
5. Good battery life
6. Swappable batteries
7. Traditional Chinese input with Hanyu pinyin

Give me an Android with features #1 and #2 above and I'll switch in a heartbeat.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

International data is what has me considering a move, not from BlackBerry to another platform, but from Sprint to T-Mobile. I've had all the North American Tier 1 carriers at one point or another. Seems like T-Mo is the only carrier offering reasonable (or any!) international data plan for BB's. Sprint recently sihtcanned all international data roaming plans. You roam - you pay full roaming rates!

Those trips to Europe for business (I pay my own bill) could get REAL expensive unless I shut off data services. My Sprint Bold 9650 can take a local pre-paid sim card and give me voice + sms, but there's no way I'm going to let myself run up a $500+ data bill for a week. In fact $500 probably is way low as an estimate.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

Yeah, RIM is all about GSM these days. On the CDMA side, Sprint has never been strong with BlackBerrys. But Verizon was the leader not so long ago. They were THE business carrier in the U.S. and it seemed like they got every single new BB model first. I guess RIM is taking a more global view of the business world these days, and that means GSM.

I definitely like this 9650 (Bold) especially since it updated to OS/6 today. Nice.

I was going to wait around for the Verizon iPhone but decided to give the BB a shot. (I'd never had one). I also have a 4th-gen iPod Touch. I think I prefer not to merge the phone with the iPod. I can leave the iPod over there in the dock and let it play music all day and still use my phone. If I crammed it all into one unit I just don't think I'd like it as much.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I moved to a BB back in 2003 and haven't turned back since. I started with a 7520, then a 7100 which on the Nextel network was very slow then but the e-mail didn't let me down. Since working in the wireless business since 2000 I have seen quite a few devices come and go, but BlackBerry seems to keep on pushing to a higher performance. Everytime I upgrade to the latest BB it impresses me more so I stick with them. Since OS6 I haven't had any issues that have made me do a battery pull like previous models.

I am looking forward to the future of RIM as they launch newer models.

I'm very interested in moving to an Android phone, but since I support BB devices it may be a bit awkward. ;)

I've already tried out a few android devices but wound up right back to blackberry cause I couldn't take the horrible battery life and slow emails. If Sprint ever gets the Iphone i'd give it a shot but for now i'm sticking to blackberry. But i'd love for BB to come out with a competing device.

I don't plan on removing myself from the Blackberry for a long time. I am a new user, and so far I am impressed with this phone. It's like your own personal computer in your hand. This so far is the best cell I've ever had.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I have been using BB for a long time but I think RIM has lost the boat. Again, as
usual Apple is directing the industry and while many are at least following RIM is not
even able to do that. I now have BB 9630 and it looks archaic when I compare it with
the performance and usability of droid phones. I am with Sprint and as soon as Sprint
gets a droid world phone I am switching. I can't wait to run Skype over wi-fi when I
travel abroad.

I've toyed with friends' devices and even made a switch to 9800 and came back to 9700. I can't get acclimated to a touch screen. It's no good for business purposes.

I do feel a certain sense of brand loyalty to RIM. I've been tempted to switch for my personal device...those other guys are so cool and sexy!!! But I just can't do it...

BB's the only phone i ever really had , for as long as i can remember , i would have thought bb would have said before i went to the os 6 we don't have any new theme's at this point , but will have one soon , i might just have waited , still love the phone ( 9700 ) and i am not giving my bb up , so i guess i will have to wait , but not happy about the way i was tricked:x

I just got my second BB went from the 9700 Bold to the 9800 Torch.

Before that i had the Nokia E72, can't see myself not having a blackberry from now on.

Although the work BB's are poor, 8900 Curve's (don't even have 3G capabilities)

Something I discovered with my last "dalliance" with Android is that I don't love the Android OS. I do like the HTC Evo hardware, but BlackBerry continues to serve me best. I think what gets so many folks to try Android or iOS is the large screen devices. Now if you were to put the BlackBerry OS onto an Evo I'd be in heaven.

I love the search for The Next Great Thing but I've always ended back with BlackBerry. They work the way I do. The last thing I want to do is change the way I do things, and I also don't want to be trying to change a different device into a BlackBerry. Better to use the real thing.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

The key for me is Exchange integration. After some years and many BBs, all reliable workhorses, using Hosted Exchange and BES, I migrated to iOS which of course supports ActiveSync. If you use Exchange mail, this is a simpler and cheaper solution than Hosted BES, although it lacks that last ounce of security.

This week's announcement - well, rumor - that Hosted BES will be free for users of MS' cloud based Exchange service, has got me hankering after a BB once more, as I still prefer that physical keypad.

If BES becomes as accessible for individual users as ActiveSync, I'll be back.

the only good thing is email/keypad.

Also, if u dont have BIS, the phone is almost useless.

skype, msn, gtalk, will not work unless your tech. minded and have patience.

surfing the web is painful!!!

3rd party apps are limited and dear for things like skype which are free!?

way to much bureaucracy with bb's.

no 2nd hand market, selling them is a pain.

If I didn't get them for free, no way would I stay with bb.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

For many of us the keyboard and email is enough to keep us using BlackBerrys. They're also pretty good with voice calls and PIM functions. Notes and tasks as well. My BB is not a toy or an entertainment center so I'm not interested in watching movies on it, nor do I use the browser for more than looking something up quickly. For music I prefer a dedicated mp3 player, in my case an iPod. But that's just me.

Of course you need a BlackBerry data plan with a BlackBerry. But you need a data plan with an iPhone or Android device too. Prices are about the same for either kind of data plan. And with a BlackBerry, because they are so much more efficient with data use than any other platform out there, your monthly data allowance will go much farther.

As for app selection, there may be less of a selection than some other platforms, but there is far less useless junk out there. BlackBerrys are more business-oriented than any other platform so there is still a bias tossers business apps. If you're looking for games or multimedia then BlackBerrys are probably not for you. Although I was recently dismayed to find a fart app for BlackBerry as well as a vuvuzela app. That made me sad.

As far as web browsing, there is no denying that's one of BlackBerry's Achilles Heels. The new WebKit/Safari-based browser in OS 6 is supposed to be a big step forward, but there is no denying that they're coming from way back in the pack.

There is definitely less unbranded/unlocked BlackBerry sellers than any other phone. That's because RIM relies on the various carriers to sell and support BlackBerrys. I've often thought a dedicated BlackBerry store would be a cool idea, but I don't know if they could be profitable. Competing with carriers and their subsidized prices would be tough.

First, you've hijacked another's thread. Bad.

Second, you've posted to a user-to-user support forum. It can take a while before anyone sees your post, and assuming anyone understands your question (I know I don't) and knows the answer, they will respond if and when they want.

Third, if you repost your question in your own thread, take some time beforehand and formulate your post so that it is clear what you are asking to do. And search before you post. Odds are your question has already been asked and answered.

X2 ^. Before you go posting in the first thread you see..., kindly take the time to "scout out the horizon" so to speak. It isnt exactly rocket science...?

As for moving to a different platform..I totally agree with the sentiments provided by Rambo47. Those of us that use this product typically do so because it is business first...and amenities second. BES is awesome. BIS is great. "Docs to go" among a few other apps are simply excellent. For music, i have no issue with my bold 9000. For me, having to keep 3 different devices for every application is a pain in the (_/\_)..!

As for the much vaunted GPS..forget it, too damned small to see or use in a vehicle, prefer my Tomtom for that...but overall, you'll never see me (at this stage of the game), with an android or apple device.

cheers,

stk

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I chose "I won't consider a move yet, I have faith RIM will come out with a competing device".

I've been a BB user since the 8100 and since have had the 8310 and now 9700 on OS6. I was able to steer my wife away from wanting an iPhone to the 9800 that she currently has.

I like BB's because of their stability and relative simplicity, coupled with the fact that I absolutely despise the iPhone. I don't do twitter, facebook, myspace, or any of that other crap. I don't need all sorts of senseless apps and I don't need a movie player.

I make calls, I send texts/emails and surf the net. BB's do all of this exceptionally well, so I'm happy. Although I really like my 9700 with OS6 and really don't care much for touchscreens, I'm seriously considering a move to the 9800 purely for processor/memory improvements and screen size. I've looked at some other devices but none of them really catch my eye at all, so for now I'm sticking with BB.

I generally agree. But I don't understand why people say that ipods and iphones are better for media and stuff, while blackberries are not. I use my bb for songs, videos, pictures all the time with no problems. I even think I can navigate through songs faster and more efficiently with my Storm. It may not has as fancy a UI though...

It may not sound like much, but I find that I can't switch to any other phone easily because of the blackberry menu button. I use it so much, it would be a hard habit to change. The ability to switch applications, flag an email, change any options, message anyone using any medium...etc...seems faster than any other device. Maybe I'm just not open-minded to other platforms, but I think bb os' menus are faster and more organized than backtracking and pressing different buttons to get to different screens just to do ONE function....

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I just bought this 9300 after 5 years with the same Motorola RAZR and a long list of disposable flip phone so its my first experience with a phone that will do anything besides make calls and take crappy little pictures that are only suitable as background noise on the tiny little display of the point of origin.

I love this phone.

I'm wasn't looking for a huge bill, movie quality display or audiophile music....I needed a keyboard and the ability to make a call every one in awhile. It took me 2 hours to figure out how to navigate thru this entire phone, 2 days too do it quickly and 3 days later I'm adding apps and changing wall paper. I put Yahoo maps, a tip calculator and activated a yellow pages app....Thats all I need on a phone. The movies I prefer to watch on a screen that is at least 60 inches across, web browsing is better on a 27 inch HD display and music belongs on a sound system that is at least 5.1 dolby surround sound IMHO of course.....

Lightwieght.....Simple to use....I've already dropped this thing on concrete 3 times and it's still running....

I think they have a good product and not everyone wants a pocket entertainment system. Personall I have other things to do day to day then stare at a little 4 inch screen.

Now, If I can just figure out how to get the facebook/twitter and myspace off this phone I wont have to bypass them everytime I hit the menu screen!

I wasnt looking for a digital baysitter.

I moved away and I'm kind of glad I'm moving back by the end of this week. I kept finding myself trying to make my HCT EVO more BlackBerry like. Nothing can beat the way the BB syncs everything in Outlook. I needed two different apps on my EVO to sync email, calendar and notes and the one that synced the notes didn't do it wireless. I've been off of this forum for a while but I'm back now and looking forward to getting to know my new phone.

The firmware has changed quite a bit since my Sprint 8330 Curve but with the help of the good people on this forum I'm sure I will get it figured out.

I keep thinking I need to play Angry Birds, Wordfeud and Words With Friends and use GTunes for free music, then the Android affair fizzles and its back to the trusty BB. I think I need to own one of each. Blackberry for the office during the week and Android for the weekend play time.

Loyal Blackberry user from 2005 - 2010. Now moving the entire company's 55 users to the iPhone. RIM's lack of innovation, quality and platform. Apple has what we need for messaging, emailing, applications and the personal experience. Wake me up when Blackberry can produce a device that won't break in 2mo of use (hint 9300, Tour's track ball, Storm's touch screen) we are done spending money to replace broken devices, upgrading devices just to get the latest platform update. Or when RIM can get applications that are actually useful.
For RIM they will always be catching up to Apple and Google period and maybe even Microsoft with WinMo 7+..
Buh Bye RIM it was interesting while it lasted.

Even though everyone has their own personal experiences with their BlackBerry, I love my xxx9742;, and you couldn't pay me to use any other competitor's phones...I did use my friends iPhone 3GS for approx 3 months and I hated it.
As soon as my BB Bold 9700 arrived in the mail I was so exited I loved it xxx8594; away and I don't care if the screen isn't big enough or faster.
I've been using different phones for several years, only to return to BlackBerry!
I love the keyboard, the display screen very clear sharp and precise graphics.
I rarely play games, but I love to bbm, after all, that's what sets BB uniqueness ...the BBM.

Once again, I ditched my 9780 and got the Sidekick 4G. I love the SK4G keyboard, but the Android interface is too slow for me. I will hold on to this until the BB 9900 releases and thats where I will stay. I realized that I dont play Angry Birds or Wordfeud as much as I thought I would. It's more of a want than a need. I bought a 9700 Bold and completely regret it.
I can't see what the 9700 can do that the older models couldn't.
I only use it for browsing, BBM, and other IM's and I am very sure that the cheaper models can run IM's/browse too.
It just feels like there are no apps at all. I know about App World but it feels so empty compared to the App Store where there is literally an app for everything.
I have moved to iPhone and I am positive that I won't be considering BB anymore unless Apple messes up or RIM brings out a phone that looks like it's new, not developed in 2000.

Enjoy a couple hundred "fart apps" and other awesome titles. What apps for BlackBerry could you NOT find?

If you bought a 9700 and really only wanted to play Angry Birds, you made a bad choice. If you wanted a professional-grade communications device there is nothing better (or even close) to BlackBerry. It's a question of where your priorities are. Web browsing and even IM are not BlackBerry strengths. Email and BBM definitely are strengths of the platform. But your claim that "App World feels empty compared to the App Store" rings hollow. Sounds like you never even looked at App World or tried to find what you wanted. Sounds kind of Apple fanboy-ish to me. If you're simply comforted knowing there are a bazillion apps for iOS available, well, I really don't know what to say.

brownkc 05-17-2011 10:43 AM

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I get a little sick of the 100 fart apps comments. It's just a dodge of the real issue that Apps for the Blackberry come out much later, if at all, than either of the other two major smart phone OSes. The reason there are a 100 fart apps is because there are so many more apps/people writing apps for Android and iOS. The nature of a locked down Blackberry and the user market has led to software writers focusing their attention elsewhere.

I have had a Blackberry phone for the last 7 years, 9700 for the last 2, and feel I have spent more than my fair share of time in the Blackberry App World. That app alone has been a miserable experience. Obviously, the selection of apps has always lagged behind the competition but the layout and search function of the app itself is bad. The newer phones may have a better version/layout of app world but my 9700 with OS5 still sucks. It's slow, occasionally loses the list of installed apps, I have no idea how it decides to check for updates (they seem to happen all at the same time at random intervals) and it doesn't indicate whether apps will play nice with permissions.

I have an iPad so I have started to get a taste of apps on other devices. I will list a few examples of apps I use and see if you can tell me whether they are available for the Blackberry and what I found. First, I like Dropbox. Yes, I know about the current security issues but it is very convenient while I travel. Yes, Blackberry eventually got it but while my iPad will open all of the files I have in it, the Blackberry needs another program for the pdf files. While traveling, I use FlightTrack and Flight Update. Flight Update is not available for Blackberry and FlightTrack doesn't have all of the features that are available on iOS. I did find a competing app with good reviews in this category but it lacked the polish of the other apps. I regularly use iBooks, Kindle and Google Books for reading on the go. I don't find any of those in the App World. I have tried downloading the Kindle App directly but it wouldn't start because of permission issues. I use Netflix and VLC for watching movies on my iPad and believe both are available for the iPhone. App World had neither. I found Maplets to be a great source for high quality maps for hiking trails, metro maps, street maps, bus maps, train maps, tourist attraction maps, airport diagrams, etc. There was nothing in App World. On top of these apps, I have lots of other apps I enjoy such as starwalk, google earth, BBC news, Bloomberg, NPR News, Chase Banking and USAA Banking. Only one of which I found in the App World.

I guess you could counter with most of those aren't business apps. Well then, what business apps does Blackberry have that aren’t on Android or iOS? Yes, you have to purchase a program to edit Office docs where Blackberry has Dataviz Standard for free but there are apps available for the other two that are equal to this app. So you can save $10-20 by buying a Blackberry that comes with the Standard Version.

So, what features does a Blackberry have that make it stand apart? Email and BBM? I have few friends with Blackberries these days so BBM just isn't a factor. No one I know uses it. As for email, I don't know what the major difference is. When I am sitting at work with both my Blackberry and iPad near me it's a tossup as to which one gets my work emails first. I may hear the Blackberry vibrate first or maybe the ding from the iPad. They both usually beat Outlook to the punch. As for readability and options, they each have their strengths. The Blackberry seems to be a bit quicker with loading the messages but the iPad creates links for any useful data on the page so you can add a calendar item, pull up an address on the map or create a new contact quicker. They both do an equally good job of hotlinking a phone number on the page for quick dialing.

To me, the strong point of the Blackberry is also its weakness. They are built to be trustworthy workhorses. The most trustworthy workhouse is one built on technology that is tried and true. Technology that is tried and true is not going to include the latest improvements. I know my Blackberry will pull a signal where many other phones won't (rare to drop a call and I usually get a signal before my friends). I know my battery life will be above average (based on reviews of the devices). I hope my software reliability will greatly exceed that of the competition. Since I have used nothing but a Blackberry for the last 7 years, I can't compare software reliability. I do know both my Blackberry has required a couple of battery pulls since I bought the iPad while the iPad has frozen up only once (user error with iTunes update starting while updating the iPad). Signal Strength is not a major issue for me since I spend most of my time in cities where I dead spot is fairly rare. As for battery length, it’s nice to last a bit longer but I still keep chargers everywhere (home, work, car and suitcase). I also carry an external charger for long trips.

For years, I have been a defender of Blackberry. While RIM dominated the smart phone market when I first entered it, it went years with little innovation. New competition quickly flew past it. Over the last year, it has struggled to catch up but we are still left trying to figure out its plans. I would say that creating a way to use Android apps is RIMs way of the admitting that they have fallen behind/may never catch up in the App wars. While you may argue that apps don't matter, I would argue that they are what make a smart device useful to its owner even if that owner just needs the amusement of a fart app.

You keep talking how amazing BB is for email and communication, why?
Not every company has a Enterprise server and every device can send/receive emails. A lot of people say their company makes them use BB while they would rather use their own personal iPhone for work.
Also you can't use Skype on BB unless you are on Verizon (USA hurray) and not everyone lives in the USA nor is everyone on Verizon. A lot of business employees use Skype for whatever reasons and they can't use it.
I know that it's not RIM's fault that Skype don't publish their software for non Verizon customers but that's non of my business, all I need to know is that you can use it on Android and iPhone.
Also RIM would probably go bankrupt if they really only wanted business customers.
For the normal customer iPhone and Android are always better, ignoring the keypad. So if we'd cut all nomal customers we would only end up with a few business customers since many of them use iPhone and Android instead of only BB.
That means?
It doesn't matter whether it's supposed to be for business/communication/whatever or not. If they want to stay in business they need to improve drastically because there seriously aren't many if any reasons to stay with BB for business or norma use.

And regarding apps, what apps are so mind blowing?
The only apps I remember are the ones that make your BB's light glow red when whatever contact messages you which is just a little bit poor.
Everything looks as if it was ancient, and there's no game that's actually fun to play compared to a lot of good games on other phones and yes our dear BB business phone should be able to run -good- games too insted of 2D images.
Why?
Because that's what you pay money for. If you wanted a phone mainly for business you could probably buy the oldest BB you can find and still do the same things as on the 9700 Bold. If they're not improving the hardware (which games rely on) when they are selling you a phone for £40 a month or £350 then what am I actually paying for?
When you buy a new Android or iPhone it feels like you bought something new. You see those new features with their unique feel but when you buy a BB it's all just a boring smarthone with no new features at all. The only reason BB is still in the race is because it's the cheapest smartphone and people want to jump on the smartphone train so they buy it. Or they have friends with BBM and want to join the club.
Also a lot of apps that companies sometimes release for members to use often don't work on BB but is always advertised with "Download ABC for your iPhone for free!". This gives BB customers again a disadvantage and no you cannot tell anyone that you pay over £350 for a phone ONLY for business use, you just can't say that in today's word.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

So, what you're saying is, if you want the best of the best fart app, you will need an iphone?

Geeze. We are talking about smartphones.

And what matters is what works for you. You aren't the model user; no one is. What makes the smartphone is what it does for you.

If models runnining android and the iphone become the mass market devices instead of BlackBerry, it matters not to me. What matters to me is the BlackBerry continues to be what I've come to depend on.

And by the way, the 9700 is probably the best BlackBerry I've owned, and OS 5 is the best BlackBerry OS. That includes OS 6, in my opinion. I haven't had any real trouble with it. But that's me.

It's great that you will never ever switch phone, it's just RIM cares if people switch and I'm sure they care more about keeping a lot of customers than about having a few people say "it does what i want it to do"

Who are you trying to convince? If you don't like BlackBerry or if it doesn't do what you want move on. If your company provides it and you can't change then use it and shut up. Buy your own iToy or Android for when you leave work.

Enough....

Well then, what business apps does Blackberry have that arenxxx8217;t on Android or iOS?

As for battery length, itxxx8217;s nice to last a bit longer but I still keep chargers everywhere (home, work, car and suitcase).

I love my iPad as well. It does an excellent job for what it is, but for my needs a BlackBerry is simply the best communications device. There is no denying the 100:1 ratio of iOS apps vs. BlackBerry apps, but in my experience so many of them are just silly and useless. So while some people say, 'It just feels like there are no apps at all. I know about App World but it feels so empty compared to the App Store where there is literally an app for everything," I say that the Apple App Store feels over-cluttered with junk while BB App World is populated with stuff I can use. For travel I like Kayak and WorldMate. There are a ton of alternative apps even for stodgy old BlackBerry. I also rely on several BlackBerry-only apps for my day-to-day needs.

There is no doubt that RIM is behind in developers for consumer-oriented apps. RIM was focused solely on business users until the Curve 8300 was introduced, and even then it took them several years to figure out how to push into the consumer space with apps and features. RIM still doesn't have it figured out. But for business-oriented users like me on BIS (not even BES), they definitely have it right.

And I'm way past wanting any "mind-blowing" apps for my BlackBerry. What I want is way more simple than that. I want reliable, professional-grade communication tools that keep me organized, focused, and productive. I actually had several Android phones for about 6 months recently. Epic 4G and Evo 4G. I jumped from BlackBerry to Android for all those mind-blowing apps, and I must admit they are the things that seduced me. Google Skymap was neat, as was Droidsat. But after the newness wore off and I got back to business, I found I was trying to make my Android phone more BlackBerry-like. I've relearned this lesson more than once too. Palm Pre, day 1 of availability. I ported to Sprint from AT&T to get it, abandoning my BlackBerry in the process. Same thing happened; I tried to convert the Pre into a BlackBerry. Smarter move for me was to just go back to BlackBerry. All those neat bells and whistles were simply not part of my focus, and when I was honest with myself I realized that.

I'm sure I'll do this again too. I'm on a quest for the best device possible. But millions of apps is not something I care about. I want quality over quantity, and it's better for me if those quality apps are more targeted to my own needs.

And in the interest of fairness and full disclosure, BlackBerry App World shows more than a dozen fart apps for BlackBerry. That stings a bit.

Go to the head of the line that needs things spelled out for them.

I wasn't talking to the people that say RIM is in a nose dive and won't pull up on the stick. That is a different discussion.

I am talking to the people who seem called to defend iphones or Android devices like someone has told them their baby is ugly, and in the process tell us how ugly is our baby.

But make no mistake. My BlackBerry is not my baby. Call it ugly all you want. I take no offense. But I will tell you beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as far as I'm concerned RIM has to continue making only one person happy, and that's me.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

Thanks for the response Rambo. I know you to be level headed in your responses and it bothered me to see the canned fart app response. All of the app stores have useless apps but more apps means a better chance for diversity to me. It also shows more interest in the platform by the software development community. I am more likely to find the travel app I need out of a 100 choices than 10. However, I also realize that quality trumps quantity but have failed to see a Blackberry App that fits my needs better than an iOS/Android app.

I tried to give some real world examples of apps I would like on my phone and when starting that response, I had not revisited App World to see if they had become available yet. I had to go back and check and found that all but one were still not available in App World. I didn't cherry pick apps off my iPad to do this (I just avoided some of the more non-business related ones: angry birds, drawn, facebook, craigslist, wikipedia, epicurious, etc.).

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I WISH BlackBerry had the developer community of either iOS or Android. But I would also want them to be more focused on productivity stuff. Completely selfish on my part, but then I'm a geezer with business needs and little interest in other things. I do understand that for RIM to survive, the consumer space is going to be critical. Folks are going to want the bells-and-whistles apps that I am not interested in.

I'm such a geezer in fact that I want to keep my music player separate (iPod) and I want to watch my movies on my TV. Maybe sometimes on my MacBook. But even that's rare. I went for the whole "convergence" thing and ultimately rejected it for multiple single-purpose devices. And, to add insult to injury, I make a TON of voice calls on my BlackBerry every day.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

A few random comments from me:

I know I'm more of the exception on this, but I prefer the RIM apps. My only complaint is that it has taken so long to get where we are today. I don't see the lack of developers as a signifcant contributing factor, at least not with respect to my needs. And developers haven't left BlackBerry to work on other platforms; there's never been much of an independent developer base as far as I can tell. But regardless, I don't see that developer base matters as far as I'm concerned. My opinion is the device had to progress to the point it could handle the apps, and RIM was dealing with numerous trade-offs as it evolved the handset.

Media and the like. I see the BlackBerry as predominantly a communication device. It is also an appliance for accessing, recording, and sharing information. Some of that information is audio, video, still images, web sites, etc. The fact that this also means you can watch movies and play music is a consequence, but not an objective. I don't see the BlackBerry as ever being or ever intended to compete as an entertainment platform. Ditto a gaming platform.

Infinity1 makes a good observation but misses the point. Yes the new BlackBerrys don't differ in big ways from previous models, except if you ignore things like the first BlackBerry with bluetooth, the first BlackBerry with a camera, the first BlackBerry with GPS, the first BlackBerry with wifi...But yes, comparing my 9700 with my old 8820, there are not a lot of differences, but then there are some differences that are big for me. Primarily a device with more memory and more powerful CPU to run a newer OS and more apps. For me it is as much about the service as it is the hardware. The BlackBerry hardware is just the appliance to access and use the service.

I know I've been sounding like a Luddite, but I never said I'm sticking with BlackBerry come hell or high water. I have said, and I think I voted, that I have no reason to switch. BlackBerry works for me, and I know enough about other products to know I wouldn't have an alternative if RIM went away.

First you said "I have moved to iphone." I read that as you are now using an iphone.

You also said you have used a 9700. You should know what it does. If you have to ask, then either you never really used one, or you didn't really understand it, or what it offers just doesn't matter to you and any old thing will do.

But just to respond to the question about what is so great about BlackBerry email (and messaging in general):

When I get a new message alert and remove the BlackBerry from the holster, the BlackBerry has already opened the new message. I can use keyboard shortcuts to reply, forward, whatever. If I need to search, I can do that with a keyboard shortcut, too, and even save and recall searches, in a matter of seconds.

I'm not limited to email when working with other BlackBerry users. PIN and BBM have there particular benefits (confirmations, they are instant) but also serve as backup in case the email server goes down.

All messages are in the messages folder. I don't have to move around to find something.

Finally, deleting emails many at a time is easy, particularly when using a saved search to recall all messages fitting particular criteria.

And the key thing is I know it is always going to work. Wherever I land and turn on my BlackBerry, I don't have to worry that it isn't going to get my messages right then and there.

You can say, "I carry my phone in my pocket, I'd never use a holster. And besides, that opening the email irritates me. Maybe I don't want to read that email right then." Or, you could say email isn't all that important because you use text, or whatever. Well, that's you. If these things don't matter to you, then they don't matter. But that doesn't mean the BlackBerry isn't a spectacular device for a lot of people; just means it wouldn't be spectacular for you.

Re: Will you move away from BlackBerry?

I've owned 6-7 blackberrys in the past 10 or so years. My needs are very simple, I'm not interested in 99% of the apps my wife is running on her iPhone4. All I want is dependable email, dependable and INFORMATIVE address book (ie organize by company/last name), dependable calendar, and a browser that will get me to and from various websites (mostly news/financial). I'm not interested in games, not interested in listening to music on a blackberry. I know, I'm boring, just like the blackberry.

Everything was going just fine with my year-old 9700, running os5, and syncing through DM5. Then I made the mistake of upgrading to os6/DM6. I swear I don't think the 9700 has enough memory to dependably run os6. And 75% of the time I sync with DM6 it freezes for one reason or other after the sync has been successfully completed.

I've been playing with my wife's old iPod Touch just to get used to the Apple experience. With a few exceptions (I don't like the address book) it works pretty good. My contract with Blackberry/AT&T ends 5/21...

By the way, I'm a semi-early adopter of Outlook 2011 for Mac. It doesn't work. Not even with the updates and the infamous SP1. God forbid that you even think of syncing a Blackberry with it.

Full disclosure: my computer is a MacBook, running 10.6.6. Outlook 2003 (still the best email/calendar/address book MS has ever made) is running on Parallels 6/WinXP. I really like the idea of subtracting one major Windows piece from the puzzle, and the white bread Apple Mail/iCal/Address Book will do.

Thanks, Jim

I really just love my Torch ! It's an awesome device and it fulfills my needs (or more like my wants) and although I think I am better suited for Android (looking at my needs/wants and looking at what Android has to offer) I just can't get use to having a huge 4'' screen with a touch screen QWERTY just because I am a daily texter and send about 200 text a day so I don't think I'd be switching anytime soon.

I love the reliability and the purpose-driven design of the BlackBerry. It just works the way I do. And for me it's not an entertainment of media device. That's an important distinction. If you want to play Angry Birds or take movies and put them on YouTube, BlackBerrys are not a good choice for you.

For me it's about phone calls, messaging, and PIM functions. And for that, BlackBerry has no equal.
