Wifi problem

I got my new 9900 on Friday and I love it but I am having an odd wifi issue.

The BB connects to wifi no problem, BIS works over wifi too. However after a short period my wifi dies. Router has to be reset. This happens over and over. When I turn wifi off on the 9900 and rest router normal services resume.

We have several devices in the household using wif, iPhone, iPad, android and my 2 blackberry"s. My 9780 doesn't cause my wifi to crash.

To test if the problem is my phone I am currently running 3 devices 2 BB's and an iPad on a mifi device with no issues.

This points to perhaps a problem with my wifi but what could it be? I am stumped.

Please update your profile to reflect your new model number.

I don't see how the BB can cause the router to crash. Might be a router problem and not a BB problem. What router are you using at home? Does it have the same problem on other WiFi systems and/or the MiFi?

Re: Wifi problem

The only other wifi it has been tested on yet is the mifi device and so far it is working just fine on there. My router is a BT Home hub and I have contacted them about it to see if they can help but no response yet.

It is very odd and so frustrating but I agree that the problem seems to be my home set up.

Profile will be updated :)

Re: Wifi problem

There could be a lot of reasons for this - hard to narrow down as well.

Here's where I'd start -

1) Update the router to the latest f/w
2) If that was done, or doesn't help, check the router's logs (enable logging if available) to see if you can find out why the router/BB is going out to lunch. Could be something very easy to fix, or not.
3) Check router config for things you may not be using - like wireless protocols you don't need, EG; wireless a/b etc...and perhaps WPS setup...enabled or not?
4) Does the router lose both sides, like LAN and WAN?
5) BB, have you tried a battery pull?

Re: Wifi problem

Eek some of that is way over my head.

The ethernet connection remains on when the wifi goes down.

BB has been rebooted, wifi connection removed and set up again a few times.

At this time I just want to know where the problem lies then work on solving it/ get my broadband provider to fix it and if is the phone get it replaced ASAP.

I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to phones but PC and network problems are a bit beyond me.

Thanks for the suggestions I will have a look in the logs and see if anything stands out.

Re: Wifi problem

You log indicates that you have firmware failure for one...and it can't resolve the host, probably your ADSL provider. 1st thing, update the firmware for the router.

Let's start from there 1st.

next ... "Aug 21 10:41:14 2011 ( 29.380000) Device with no MAC wasn't assigned a MAC" ... is your router/ADSL modem 1-and-the-same-unit?!??

You have roughly 6 devices that can connect to your WLAN router (9780 not at the same time as your newer BB). Is there an imposed limit set on registered devices allowed to connect (i.e. MAC Filters or Network Filter)?

Re: Wifi problem

My router is in two parts, a hub and a vdsl box I believe. it is fibre optic to exchange broadband.

Anyways. I spoke to my provider who had me changing channels. Have been on channel 2 successfully for some hours now (crashes on channels 1,6 and 11) so here's hoping :) am surprised it may be a fairly simple fix.

Thanks for the help everyone :)

These vdsl (or whatever) boxes have been known to overheat, mine has been exchanged once already after 5 months of use. BT are replacing them.

My router is also up to date, these updates are done automatically.
