Wirelessly posted (blackberry 8140)

Hmmmm that's a good question!!!!

ndub33 04-03-2008 06:56 PM

Better question-which will best meet customer needs?

"First" doesn't always mean "best".

wabbit 04-03-2008 07:05 PM

better question is who will roll out g4 / 3.5 networks first where data/voice can be used at the same time, i could care less over iphone 3g bb 9000 who will be first, since its comparing comply 2 different devices / systems.

Through wifi or through the network?

Sith_Apprentice 04-03-2008 07:24 PM

through WIFI on data and mobile network on Voice

wabbit 04-03-2008 07:46 PM

yeh i'm really looking forward to both running simultaneously over a network. from rumors i read g4 should make this a reality.

Sith_Apprentice 04-03-2008 08:02 PM

some versions of 3G are capable of this, all 4G devices *should* be capable of this as well.

JBaughb 04-03-2008 08:46 PM

the at&t HSDPA network is considered 3.5g and you are capable of voice and data connections at the same time.

4g wont happen for many years though. Even these so-called "4g" technologies are still just the tail end of a 3g technology with (low end) 4g speeds (WiMax and LTE). 4g will be a completely IP based wireless network where voice calls are just VOIP that will obviously co-exist with simultanious data sessions. Its very exciting...but most likely three to four year away (maybe more now that at&t is saying they hope to milk HSDPA through 2009).

that is my understanding on why its g3.5.

on a side note while current evdo rev. a is capable of both, none are implenting it and when they do, its getting named g4 i think.

Sith_Apprentice 04-03-2008 09:06 PM

revA is being implemented by all CDMA carriers. Well i cant say all, but i know Sprint/VZW are, and so are the smaller carriers they are regional

wabbit 04-03-2008 09:12 PM

CDMA2000 1xEV-DV which is g3 cdma is voice and data at the same time.
just no cdma carrier allows this :(

edit: the rev a vz and sprint are doing is to CDMA2000 1xEV-DO

JBaughb 04-04-2008 12:48 PM

Thats because EV-DV was costly solution without much benefit (only like 3Mbps). Easier to maintain an EV-DO network with a 1x voice network and save the money untill a better solution (WiMax or LTE) was developed and tested.

zkyevolved 04-04-2008 03:45 PM

I can confirm that I've had a 3.5G device and it's cool being able to talk on the phone while surfing the net :) plug in those hands free, and surf! Kill's the battery bigtime, but hey ... Progress is progress! Right?

its still 3rd gen cdma, and it is capable of both. when vz/sprint deploy g4 "data / voice running in parallel its what they will coin as g4.

which kinda ticks some off at least att is gonna coin it at 3.5 and i think most gsm carriers will too.

i just think its practical, wifi is awesome, but overall, when their is no wifi, etc and all you have is a network, and you need to send something important and don't want to recall, both at the same time, is a big step fwd.

With todays news its looking like the iphone will be first. They are now saying the 3G iphone will be available in 60 days.

mortys11 04-05-2008 10:33 PM

i hear the "meteor" aka 9000 is coming late summer/early fall.

JBaughb 04-06-2008 03:00 PM
