ALT DEL is Deleting the entire field in SMS! HELP

Hi, I am so so frustrated by this, ok, so if I am typing an SMS/Text then want to go and delete a mistake in the middle somewhere for example and scroll over and hit ALT - DEL, it wont delete the character it is supposed to but rather everything, the ENTIRE field. Not just what is to the left of the cursor even! This is drving me nuts....NOTE: this is for SMS only and not email as the feature works in in emails, go figure... :?:x
Bold9700, Telus, OS 5.0

Surely you just need to press delete.
it will delete the letter infront of the cursor.
Or the letter highlighted.

Holding ALT doesnt change anything the delete button does, cept in this case, it deletes everything.

Seriously, try it again and just press the DEL button, not the ALT button.

My BlackBerry 9000 does this as well. Quite frustrating as I'm used to being able to hold the alt key while deleting something. Seems, for better or worse, to be a new feature in OS 5. However, as the above post details, if you don't hold down alt it deletes just the one preceding character as normal.

My 9000 doesnt do this.
Holding ALT makes no difference, it does the same as just using the del key on my 9000.

Strange.

wayneholbrook 11-22-2009 12:41 PM

That is strange, mine doesnt do that either

This happened to me too in SMS... not emails or BBM or any other app. Please post your version numbers.
I'm currently upgrading to the latest beta of 5.0 on my tmo 8900

I didn't even know that alt delete deletes the character in front of it, so I thought this made perfect sense.

Before threaded texts, I don't know about you, but if I wanted to get rid of everything I just typed I would simply hit back, then discard, and just reply again. It was the fastest way because it erased things so slowly when you just held delete.

Now, when you hit back while typing a text it auto saves it. Erasing it is faster, too, but, I think the alt delete thing is amazing for just getting rid of the whole message... much easier this way.

I can see how it's confusing, though, if you were used to using it before. In fact I may use this now that I know about it in emails. Either they will find another way to make it erase the whole message, or we'll have to get used to this action doing 2 different things in email vs sms.

Just checked... mine does it too... weird... in the meantime I suppose I can go one more letter over and backspace! :)

I'll make a source code change and recompile the OS for you, so that does not happen.

IMHO its a terrible thing to have to think about when you're typing an SMS. Anytime I correct a typo in an SMS using ALT + DEL I end up deleting the whole field. But not in email or any other app...I hope someone on the 5.0 dev team is reading this, the inconsistency in the UI really bothers me :x

Exact problem I have.

[
nl]I suppose the feature makes sense now that pressing the back/return key no longer deletes the entire message, but it's hard for me personally to see much use for this feature as I very rarely want to delete my entire text. And as said before it really is a problem of consistency. I'm used to being able to hold down alt while deleting one character at a time, so it gets quite confusing and frustrating.

For all of you who said this does not happen, are you on OS 5 and if so which version and BlackBerry? I am on 5.0.0.314 with a BB 9000.

illuzioN 11-24-2009 01:47 PM

Hmmm... My phone does not do this....

User error? :p

8900 Tmo 5.0.0.348

I am noticing this problem/feature on my 9700 as well. I do not like that it is inconsistant with the way it operates in other applications. Maybe there is a way to change back to the way it operates everywhere else in the phone...

pda luvr 11-25-2009 01:38 AM

Illuzion, what phone/ OS rev are you running? Please confirm that its in SMS

I'm on a Tmo 8900 with OS 5.0.0.348

Um no. I started this thread and been using a blackberry since 03. This definitely a problem and if you've been using one for that long, relying on THIS feature to all of a sudden have it taken away in the new OS 5.0.0.348 and only in SMS too, it's hard to just remember to 'adjust' and use backspace ONLY when texting etc. It's got to be an oversight. You know, old habits die hard. And in this case that feature is so second nature to me, this is really annoyinmg! Someone from RIM please include this in the next OS update?? Please?? Thanks!!

Recently upgraded from the 9000 running 5.0.0.314 to the 9700 running 5.0.0.296 - issue is still present. Thankfully I have gotten a bit more used to it now and since purchasing the phone on Friday I have only made this mistake once.

whdigital 12-01-2009 01:44 PM

Happens on my 9700, but and it most definitely didn't work that way on my 8320. What I hate is that I use the quote marks frequently to denote sarcasm and such. If you miss the L key just a bit and happen to hit delete by accident - BAM, your drafted message is gone! Before it would just delete the last character typed.

I am on T-Mobile v5.0.0.330

stevew 12-01-2009 09:25 PM

Right - happens on my 9700 and NEVER happened on any BB I ever had before, or even on my Curve with OS 5.0 beta...really sucks...

True but you can do it by accident too, it's really a very poor oversight. I hope someone from RIM is reading this and adds this fix into the new build (along with allowing you to edit auto text from the SMS field too like you used to be able to!)
