Bill Nye, in response to U.S. Rep. Paul C. Broun, R-Ga., a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Video of Broun calling evolution and the Big Bang Theory xxx8220;lies straight from the pit of Hellxxx8221; went viral in recent days.

Re: President Obama and Evolution
JS! How have you been?
Things are good. I am (drum roll) finishing up my first novel, and hope to submit it for publication in January. That's consumed all of my nonexistent free time for months. Otherwise things are the same as they've always been. Job, family, teaching Dave Ramsey classes at my church, voluntarily overextending myself and xxxxxing about it after the fact. All the typical Kathryn hobbies. :-) Still using the EVO 4G. Extended battery, experimental OS. The last ROM I flashed was Mason-G-v0.14. That was back in August. I've been so happy with it I haven't touched it since. |
Re: President Obama and Evolution
Wow, a blast from the past! Glad to hear from you Kathryn. Best of luck on getting your novel published.

Re: President Obama and Evolution
Interesting post. I would only offer that belief is the wrong word. I don't 'believe' in evolution, but I do understand the science that supports the Theory of Evolution. And there is an overwhelming body of evidence, otherwise, it wouldn't be elevated to a Scientific Theory.
And I agree, it is very clear that humans didn't evolve from apes, and no evolutionary biologist supports this notion. But it is quite clear that apes and humans had a common ancestor. |
Re: President Obama and Evolution
I believe some human type are de-evolving and in a few years our politicians will look like apes.

Re: President Obama and Evolution
I'm amused by that link, but I disagree with the underlying premise.
The English language has reason and rules and rhythm, and when it is used fully and intentionally its beauty can bring me to tears. Yes, proper English is at risk as fewer people each year are learning to use it well. And, perhaps devilishly, I'm now firmly in favor of striking the word "like" from our lexicon completely... there are workarounds. :-) However, language is a medium, not an end in itself. It is a tool for the exchange of ideas. If modern presidents want their ideas to be understood (and therefore accepted) by the general public - something that wasn't necessary before the advent of television - tailoring their message to the public's level of education is necessary. Suggesting that governing language should be aimed at the well-educated is deliberately exclusionary. Most people aren't. Using language as a weapon against those whom it was designed to serve is undemocratic. Furthermore, deliberately ridiculing those whose only crime is their embrace of the speech patterns of their own time is at best elitist and pretentious. At worst, it is a sign that higher education has failed. The transformation of an open, seeking mind into a closed and bigoted one is a tragedy. And bigotry is a far worse malady than ignorance. The latter can be cured by education and opportunity; the former is a disease of the spirit. To the extent that any speaker is understood by his listener, he has used language well irrespective of his word choice. There are people who are unwilling to accept that truth. In a fast-paced society where information is the primary currency, they risk being left behind. |

Dang it. You're right. It's tough and I see where you are coming from. I don't know what the solution is. Maybe it's just making sure to respond every single time someone says "it's just a theory" with "yes, but it's a Scientific Theory and here's what that means". Or, we could just show the attached picture each and every time and be done with it.

Re: President Obama and Evolution
Ok another direction. There is a bill in congress to extend the terms of both the president and the other fools. Could see that coming.
Representative Jose Serrano (D-NY) introduced a bill Friday which would abolish term limits on the U.S. presidency. H.J. Res. 15 seeks to repeal the 22nd Amendment, and if passed would allow President Obama to become the first president since Franklin Roosevelt to run for a third term. The bill has been referred to committee and officially states that it seeks "an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President." |

That was funny tsac. And jsconyer, I don't know why either. The arguments he rolls out are tired old lines from the Discovery Institute. None of them make sense. I especially like the old 'it breaks the 2nd law of thermodynamics' idea. Yeah it might if the earth was a closed system. But anyone who has ever suffered through a sunburn knows that we don't live in a closed system. The most laughable line was something about it being 'just one dudes dudes theory'. One dude! That one dude was presumably Charles Darwin. And without the benefit of modern genetics, he was remarkably right. And of course he's been backed up by literally thousands of scientists in the last 150 years. So a wee bit different than 'one dude'.

Agree, I think it's just something that over the years has become expected to allow the new president to make the call.
