APPS!!! Look at OsmAnd open source maps for BB OS 10

This is truly a fabulous mapping app... I downloaded the free one for BlackBerry OS 10 for my Z10, and it shows even the smallest trail routings through local parks in my Broadmead, Saanich BC neighbourhood! There are pedestrian and auto views, and others probably... I have not fully explored it all yet.

It started out on Android, the URLs for it and the info are below.

Be careful which map you download, somehow I got an all-Canada background map with the BC map I downloaded, and the download took 4 or 5 hours I think... even in our house with a very good WiFi network...

It's quite technical, the info and the webpages, and I don't understand it all, but I bet other users here will have a blast with this! There are various layers you can add... I bet you can get trail maps through all the major National and Provincial parks! This is a really great application for a smartphone...

The spelling is, for some reason, OsmAnd.... BlackBerry World did a search and found it, but I don't think it's listed on BBy World, I may be wrong... IT SHOULD BE!!!

OsmAnd on BlackBerry

and

Welcome To OsmAnd

This service S-U-C-K-S right now. It might be something in the future, but for now it's pretty bad.

Curious -- why? As someone who thought the maps were great for pedestrians walking where trails are available, or biking, it looks great to me. It looks promising to me, more so than the plain-vanilla maps. Can you give a good reason or two? It's not too helpful to say something sucks without explaining why...

I found the app unstable and the data slow to load. Plus it stuttered and froze. And it just doesn't bring much to the table IMHO.

Thanks for your reply. I will see if mine is unstable... it looks really great to me, though, I'd like to get other comments by users of the Z10 on this one. The maps appear to be very detailed, really unusually so, I suppose that's why it's slow to download. You can use it offline, which I like, and I think that's why it may be slow downloading, it's loading up a lot of open-source contributed map data. As I said, our community here is very environmentally aware and nature-conscious, here in the largely suburban municipality of Saanich on Vancouver Island, just a bit north of the provincial capital of Victoria, a small city itself. There is an amazing network of paths and trails for walkers and bicyclists and all the names of the shops and buildings/ponds/lakes/tiny and large parks/various other features are on this map of BC, so all these details would be available to me now anywhere in BC. I have not yet tried out the interactive features while online, as I don't want to over-use my carrier's wireless connection. So far mine doesn't seem unstable, apparently the map is updated and improved quite often...

The paid version has a 4.5 star rating by users on BB World, and the free version has a 3 star rating.

I should try the paid version. I didn't rate the free version as I saw no point in slamming a new product that may just be feeling growing pains.

Perhaos there are other OSM based maps native to BB? The OSMAnd, I believe, is only an Android port, hence the performance issues?

I've always used either BlackBerry Maps or Google Maps. They have worked flawlessly for me.

I'll try those too, I like the BlackBerry Maps and I've been trying out Waze. But I must say I like OsmAnd -- yes, it may originally have been somehow brought in from Android, but it does seem to work well on my Z10 in the version I downloaded. I just like the "pedestrian" or walker's view and the trail maps -- it's great, because a lot of the trails around here don't have physical maps on posts, you know the wayside viewpoints that trails have usually, to show the way around, or something... some are on the trails, but a lot are left up to the guesswork of the walker, or a printed map... but in our area in Saanich on Vancouver Island, BC, all these details are on the free OsmAnd map on the BlackBerry Z10! Great GPS positioning service when not online, too... don't have to be using carrier WiFi... the BlackBerry GPS is a powerful one, great, thanks BB!
