GM Onstar drops Blackberry

Looks like GM will be dropping support for the Blackberry devices.
Attempts to download to any version from the Google App store fails.
If it were possible to simply download the App and try side loading as an Android app it might work but Google blocks any download unless it detects the device as one it allows.

Nice going GM. Not everyone wants a Google Android or Iphone:x

Apparently only 99%+ of consumers want Android or iPhones..
Are you actually surprised that another company dropped BB support?

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

Sadly it is the direction. Not surprised.
My only issue is the size of the new phones. I suppose I will eventually look at different models and see if I can find one I like sized the same as the Z10 or close.

I called the service number given in the GM letter I received and they said not all Android phones will be accepted. Asking why not, I was told the phone has to be either IPhone or a Google Android. All other phones including Blackberry and Microsoft windows phones are not useable. I asked if Google was buying GM. The rep was quiet. He did say the requirement was to have a Google account and that would allow Google and GM to be able to access the vehicle for both diagnostic and marketing requirements. I asked why does Google need to know what or where I'm driving. He said for future consumer offers that would display on my vehicles display. He suggested it may be a sale item near a store I would be passing. Also to "alert" the driver and passengers on a nearby restaurant. Also Google has a feature to allow users to "locate" their device and that may include your car.

Talk about big brother knowing every step.

I may be reactivating my Motorola Bag phone.:smile:

Not surprised.

But....

You can't access Google's store and Google's services with a stock BB10 device, right. Yeah, you can sideload. And you can also use Cobalt's user workaround.

And Google aside, what about the Amazon app store. Is the onstar app on there?

It would be no surprise if onstar is actually not allowing connections from BB10. But I wonder if the customer service person at GM is even aware of Android BlackBerry models. I seriously doubt Google store or Google services or GM onstar is blocking android devices by or branded BlackBerry.

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

The original GM OnStar app is on Appworld and others but the new GM app is only on Google and Apple. Any attempt to download from Google is blocked once they detect the version of the phone. I call GM and they said that's how Google wants to require users who use their site for the OnStar app. I asked it they were aware of blackberry android phones and other allowing sideloading. they only gave me the party line on using google version os. the real weird part is they also are dropping Microsoft windows phones.
Hopefully the App will be on another site where I can do a sideload like I have done with other Android apps.
So far no luck. I will see if I can try a few other was to download the app.

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

Update;
I sent an email to the GM rep and suggested they offer the android app on the Onstar site and was told they intend to off load all software to the google and apple stores.
As suggested by previous reps they said the new displays on the GM vehicles will be able to "suggest " wonderful offers from "partners" when a vehicle is near or passing a store or restaurant. The new name will me called Mylink and own the driver.
Looks like GM has found a way to make even more money on cars even after the sale.

I guess the ads they showed in the movie Total Recall are coming and maybe we have to sell our selves to the ad companies for more or less ads

maybe moving off grid is a good idea in some ways

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

Agreed, very frustrating to see such a drastic change all for advertising. The service currently offers a good ability to control the vehicle remotely for starting, stopping, tire pressure, door lock /unlock and location including various things needing service. If they move in the direction planned you will have to pull over to read ads.

Ads sound like a good reason not to purchase a GM vehicle in the future.

FYI, I make it a point NOT TO PURCHASE from companies that flash ads to me on my computers or mobile devices.

Further research , it looks like a lot of car companies will be doing the same thing.

Ford will be using Microsoft Azure cloud services. I suppose it's only a matter of time before they all do.

Now I understand this guy.

I wonder how long my 11-year old Honda will last? I'm really tempted to find out. I'm waiting on the new Bronco, but....

I wonder if you can turn the krap off? Unplug a fuse?

Sadly the computers in the new cars control everything. While installing an LED lamp vs a standard incandescent one I was looking for the signal light flasher and discovered the sound comes from a speaker and the computer controls the lamp. Further looking shows just about every control and indicator is controlled by the same computer.
Wonder how we would get out of a locked car if they had electronic controls and door locks. Use the obsolete Blackberry phone to break the window.

Go to a Chevrolet dealer and see how this is done with the Corvettes. You have a key hidden in the key fob that can be used to open the trunk. In the trunk is a hidden pull handle that will open the drivers door. The hood is also a mechanical pull so in a few minutes you can get to the battery.

I had a Toyota RAV4 with electronic controls and door locks.

When the battery died suddenly, I was able to open the driver's side door with a small key inside of the key fob (as TBOLTRAM pointed out) and open the hood.

I have a Chevy Avalanche Black Diamond, the last of the Avalanches. The key fob does not have a key but I do have keys to get in if needed.
Soon we wont have to worry, the cars will pick us up when we need to go somewhere and if they need service they will drive to the dealer. all we will see is the bill!!

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

The self driving car will pick us up, but the app you need won't be available on BB10.

Re: GM Onstar drops Blackberry

I would figure something out. But it will be moot. By that time, if that time comes, BB10 will be a memory.

At some point so will Apple, Google and Amazon.
