Text entry woes...

I've scoured the forums and have a few issues that are preventing me from being content with keeping my storm. Let's say you have the phone upright and are typing using SureType, and you want to type "Haha". Of all the matches that come up, none obviously allow you to enter the word. Is there a way to quickly enter the word and have it become available for future input? Or do I need to either enter it into the custom dictionary or switch on multitap mode?

Also, when editing a document in MemoPad for example, how is it possible to go and edit text within something that's already typed? I've tried lightly tapping on the screen and holding like you can when composing messages, but it doesn't allow me to move the cursor to be able to edit any of the text in the document.... This is something I used very frequently on my 8830, and if it's not something that's possible I'm just going to be able to keep this phone.

Thanks guys for any input! :)

create an autotext for something you use frequently.

I just switch to qwerty keyboard for words that I know are not going to be easy for SureType to come up with. And supposedly the dictonary will "learn" what words and phrases you use often, and move them up in the choices. So it should get better with time.

As far as the text selection, I have found that it just takes practice to get it to do the cursor move thing. I don't know if there is some trick to it or what, but it doesn't seem to do it on command for me so I just play around with it until it does it. Usually after I have moved it closer to the word I'm looking for by clicking next to it.

I found that putting things in the custom dictionary work really well. It's funny because if you look at my custom dictionary, it's all internet acronyms like lol, rofl, omg, omfg... haha... yeah that too.

I have set multitap as the default mode sooooo many times but it consistently switches out of that mode. In particular, I want multitap enabled in dial pad mode. There is not way to set multitap from the menu key when in dial pad so I have to go to another application to reset to multitap mode.

Text Woes

I have also been bothered by the vertical typing issues. On programs that allow switching to landscape (qwerty) mode, I just do that. Unfortunately, virtually all 3rd party programs do not yet recognize the landscape mode. This creates a real serious problem. I spent about 20 minutes registering a program this afternoon which should have taken about 30 seconds.

I spoke to the developer who suggested that I deactivate the "T9" mode for the keyboard which eliminates this very annoying problem. The problem is there is no option for this. It is apparently standard on lesser cellphones. I have never seen it on a BB.

On the other hand, I am starting to get the hang of the landscape mode. I am up to typing about half as fast

UPDATE: .83 fixed all my keyboard issues. All work properly . Doing the keyboard screw adkust thing upped the speed a lot. Very satisfied now. 73

is it me or does the new update (.75) OS version not allow more than 160 chars in each message...this is annoying anyone else having this issue????????

because i love texting novels to my friends and family...it seems as if i'll have to start sending messages in pieces...

lame?!

barbwyr 12-03-2008 10:45 PM

It's not the update it's the nature of SMS. Short Message Service is just that. 160 character limit per message. Some carriers will automatically seperate them into multiple messages for you but I don't believe Tmobile does.

lambdacoreaz 12-03-2008 10:49 PM

yea i guess coming from my curve its hard adjusting...guess i have to shorten my messages...that's lame, but oh well...im surprised i hadn't noticed it before lol...thanks!

I have no idea how you guys even use Suretype. I have mine set to the old school 3 letters per key, like the good 'ole Razr days. :P

Yeah hey guys, I have the same question/problem. I'm kinda old school so multitap for me works best. My Storm allows me to "enable" multitap but I don't know how to make it the default. Can anyone help???
Enabling multitap will just enable it but will go back to suretap default after a little while and it's annoying.. for a phone that's supposed to make you faster, it takes a few extra steps and time to press the menu button, scroll to "enable multitap" then type the message.. I would just like it to be multitap always with the option to switch, not the otherway around..
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers!

I think I fixed it... in options, disable autotext for SMS text... seems to keep the multitap function activwe always.

rxloren 12-11-2008 04:57 PM

nope.. not fixed.. reverts back to crazy type.. lol.

To edit text, first click somewhere near the location you want to edit. Then tap (don't click) and hold for about 2 seconds near the word you want to edit. Then, while keeping your finger on the screen, you'll see a new box cursor appear. Move that box cursor to the location where you want to edit and lift your finger. It will automatically select that character and you'll be able to edit (delete, add, etc.).

Give it a try-- works really nice.

Here's a quick way to add a word to your custom dictionary. Once you have typed a word not recognized by the software and it has the dotted underline, click on that word to bring up suggestions, then hit the BB/Menu key and select "Add to Dictionary."

Anyone figured out how to "permanently" set the dial pad to multi-tap without reverting back to auto-text despite enabling multi-tap millions of times?

thanks!

kirson 12-22-2008 03:04 PM

It's been around a week - anybody figure this out yet? Is there a way to keep multi-tap as the default?

rachamphetamine 12-22-2008 07:34 PM

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 9530)

Options > screen/keyboard > portrait view keyboard > change from SureType to multitap.
