Switching from Torch back to 8900

Strange, I've had the Torch for a little over a Month and it's nice just not as easy to use as the previous 10+ Blackberry devices I've used. I'm going back to an 8900 without 3g + with the old track ball, so we will see if this works better or in fact I go back to the Torch in a few weeks...

Anyone else switch back and forth from a Torch? I miss the keyboard on the Curves with individual buttons.

AZsteelman 11-11-2010 10:04 AM

Man, I hear what you are saying, but give it a chance. You have to open your mind to the complete difference of the two and roll with it. The Torch will end up being much better than the 8900 - I had some growing pains with it when I first made the switch, but there is so much more to it if you allow yourself the freedom of your mind to explore.

They can have my Torch when they pry it from my cold, dead, fingers.

DallasFlier 11-11-2010 11:38 AM

Wow, I have to agree with AZ. I've had my Torch for about 3 weeks now, moved from an 8900 just like you. I can't imagine going back to the 8900 with the half-size screen, the trackball that too often wasn't working correctly due to dirt in it, etc. Getting used to the new interface and the touch screen takes a while, but switch back to the 8900 instead of learning the Torch interface? No way (and my 8900 is sitting here, could easily do so if I wanted.)

everytime I pick up any trackball device, I long for my Torch.

jDMJeRk 11-11-2010 12:08 PM

I agree! I still dont like my Torch like my Bold. I'm really disappointed. I'd switch back but I decided to sell my Bold to recover some of the money I dumped into the Torch.

The OS upgrades have been near junk, there still aren't a lot of supporting applications for them.

I've considered buying a damn iPhone because of all this. Its pretty sad when you and a group of friends are sitting around and you ask "oh hey who has an iPhone, I need to check something really quick"

Anyhow /rant

EDIT: noticed a new OS was released on the 9th- I'll check that out :D :: crosses fingers ::

Man, this says it all! I just traveled with a guy who still had an 8900 and another who had the 9700. While we were in the airport, I played around for a few minutes with each of them...no friggin' way I'd take that step backward! I kept trying to touch things to make them work and how the hell did I EVER get along with half a screen before??? YIKES!

shanezam203 11-11-2010 02:39 PM

New OS? my torch is 6.0 bundle 695 & says my BB is up to date.

I'm going to try the Curve 3g, I don't know what it is about the Storm or the Torch that keeps hanging me up. I WANT to make it work, but I like how light the Curve is + spaced out letters.

Strange, it must be me. I couldn't get used to the touch screen, having the keyboard open to type, didn't like typing on screen & the weight of it... I'm in a new AT&T Curve and I love it, maybe I will go back to the Torch in a few weeks. :-)

Ditto here. I loved my 9000, but can't imagine going back now. I agree that there is ramp up with the Torch. It's a very different experience from a typical Blackberry, but now having lived with my Torch for close to two months, I can't imagine giving up the flexibility the Torch offers.

I expected the learning curve & time to get used to the new device, just strange after a little over a month and thousands of calls, texts & emails I prefer the Curve.

I've been back in the Curve for 3 days now and I'm real happy.

I just picked up my wife's 8900 to install and configure an app yesterday for her. Wow, that keyboard feels SO cheap in comparison to the Torch! Will be getting her a Torch as soon as she's eligible for the upgrade in January.

I understand what you are saying, I just wasn't crazy about having to slide the device open so freaquently to use keyboard & never got 100% used to on screen keyboard. So it was just a preference to prefer the 8900/ Curve over the Torch slider...

the Torch has a touch screen and a proper browser

sure the 8900 is easier to use as its more basic, but so is a nokia 6303i

if you want to move on in life, sometimes you need some paradigm shifts

at the end of the day, the torch is easier to use for me.
the fact that you get click on the screen on virtually anything you want is so much quicker and more intuative then non-touch.

all the other blackberrys seem like stoneage to me now.

perhaps the 9700 or 9780 might be more your cup of tea ?

Re: Switching from Torch back to 8900

I switched back from the 9800 (AT&T) to the 9700 (T-Mobile). Perhaps as much for the network (I had more dropped calls on AT&T in a day than on T-Mobile in a week) and at least I can rely on UMA for areas of poor coverage.

The 9800 still needs to grow up a bit. How come I can't switch off the views I don't want? How come tapping the time ALWAYS brings up Manage Connections (which leads to connections being shut down) and I can't change that.

It needs some work. Just my .02

And I like paradigm shifts. And other trendy phrases also.

After using BB6, I could not imagine going back to BB5. The outward QWERTY vs sliding out is personal preference. But, the new browser is just right. The interface is better. Universal search is a dream. If you like the Bold form factor but dislike the touch screen and opening the phone, just throw BB6 on a 9700. New browser, but you're able to keep your trackpad and single-piece form factor.

Had a Sprint phone and never dropped a call. Itxxx8217;s no wonder ATT dropped the xxx8220;least dropped call networkxxx8221; advertizing. Maybe offloading the Iphone will help.

I'm sure if they throttled their network to run as slow as Sprint's it would, too. If you move data twice as fast, people will find reasons to move twice as much data...

And, no matter how fast the data is, dropped calls will result in lost customers.
