What counts as data usage?

Hi all,

I removed the blackberry data package from my plan since it was costing me too much. I went on using emails and "crunch SMS" app, and I got a text from telus saying that I've used over $50 worth of data. I haven't touched anything on my phone since then because I was horrified that things were going to cost me =S I'm confused about what counts as data and what doesn't. Pls help! Thanks so much!

SMS is phone. I assume that CrunchSMS also uses the phone side and not data, but I do not know. You need to ask them.

Email is data. Web is data. BBM is data as are most of the IM apps. A lot of apps use data and if you don't close them out when you are finished, they keep using data until you hit the "close" button (not exit out).

Probably cheaper to get a data plan.

What cell carrier do you use? Please update your profile to add that information. It helps when you have questions like this.

Thanks so much. Does anyone else know which apps count as data and which dont (esp. crunch SMS)? And how do I get rid of email icons on my screen (completely)?

You would have to check with the developer to confirm, but I don't see why crunch would use data. Its merely intercepting the SMS's sent to your phone and showing them in it's own crunch interface.
