"invalid SIM card" message

I just bought a 8100 pearl priate sale. It comes up with the above message when I insert my Vodafone NZ SIM card.
Took it to Vodafone NZ tried a few SIM cards, same thing, its definately not the SIM cards.
Other than paying for them to check it out $50 min charge, I wonder if anyone as had this problem and a possible solution.

Thanks KT:?

Is it branded for your carrier? Did you put sim in properly? Sounds like it isn't unlocked.

Welcome to BB Forums.
It's most likely locked. That's the message you get when you put a SIM card in (from another carrier) into a locked BlackBerry.

Here is an FAQ - How do I determine if my BlackBerry is "unlocked"? - BlackBerryFAQ - which may help you.

If it is locked, you will need to contact one of the commercial unlockers for assistance.

How do I unlock my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

Thanks for the responses.

I now have an unlock code from Vodafone Australia for my BB. I can get to Step 7 below but when I attempt Step 8 no typing shows on the screen.

What am I doing wrong?
========================
1. Take note of the unlocking code shown above
2. Insert a Non-Vodafone Australia working SIM card.
3. The phone will then display a message. The most common is xxx8220;Invalid SIM cardxxx8221;. (Different message? See FAQ below)
6. Select xxx8220;Turn Wireless Offxxx8221;
7. Select xxx8220;Settingsxxx8221; Menu , then go to Advanced Options > SIM Card
8. Type alt-MEPT by holding the ALT-key and typing the letters MEPT with multitap i.e. type hold ALT, type {M}{ER}{OP}{OP}{TY}
9. When prompted with xxx8220;Enter Network MEP code (255 left)xxx8221; on the screen, enter the 16-digit network unlock code provided for your phone, then press Enter. (Unlocking code is shown above)
10. Reset the phone by pulling the battery

You will not see the text when you type.

Oh I see, or dont see lol.. Will try again

John Clark 12-29-2007 09:04 PM

I thought you typed MEP2

kitemare007 12-29-2007 09:05 PM

Yahoo! Sweet, its working! Thanks for everyone's help. Vodafone Australia do indeed put a lock on the phone but luckily provided the unlock code and all the instructons (except that you dont see the text step 8) for free. Happines filled, now need to customise my phone!!
Thanks everyone and HNY from New Zealand!
