Website opens then shuts down

One website I like and use a lot is cbc.ca/news for local and world news. I have had it on my BB desktop for ages and it has always opened with no problem, and stayed open until I closed it. Recently, it opens and stays open for a few seconds, then becomes a blank screen and stays that way. There is nothing I can do to fix the problem. I even downloaded a general purpose new app for mobile phones, with CBC as one of the choices, and when I click on it, the same thing happens. This does not happen on any other site on my BB, not even news sites. However, the problem doesn't occur on my pc or my Kindle tablet. I suspect it's a cbc website problem for cell phones, rather than something my BB is doing, but who knows. Tsac. Do you get the same occurrence as well if you go to cbc.ca/news?

Same here on my Passport. And with browser still open, when page is reloaded the content shows again for a second or two and then screen goes white.

You could ask cbc.ca about it if they provide a means to do so--and maybe you have--but I would expect they would blame the BlackBerry browser. In fact I would attribute the problem to the BlackBerry browser at this point. It could be something temporary because of something unintended that has been done to the site that might be corrected at some point. I have had that happen, where something weird happens for a while and then stops. (The delta.com mobile website gave me a weird problem earlier in the year that lasted for a few weeks and then resolved on its own.)

IMHO, A lot of changes based on Android updates by Google have caused a lot of problems with various web sites and apps that previously worked well. I have looked and looked for a solution to the GM OnStar Mylink app failure after the Google update 5-6 months ago. The solution talked about on a few forum sites is for Blackberry to do updates to the latest Android support. the statement from BB is it's not going to happen and users should move to a new BB model. Sure and end up at the same point sooner or later.

As for the CBC news site , The link below shows they only support the 4.1 Android or above and certain browsers.

Yeah, but the CBC help site comment is 5 months old, and my CBC news site was working fine until about last Monday. I"ll wait and see if the problem clears up. If not, the CBC site is not my first choice anyway and I have a better option which works fine. But good to know that I am not alone. Thanks to both of you.

Yeah. I get sites that throw up a notification that my browser isn't supported, yada, yada, yada, but then in the usual case I can close the notification and read the site ok. Then there are cases where things aren't ok. BB10 and BBOS are frozen in time and the rest of tech moves on.

Well maybe the sites don't immediately update the requirements. GM stated they did around the beginning of the year but I lost service about the end of March. Maybe the same for the site your looking at.
Google is pushing the latest Android version for pure marketing reasons and the ability to send adds to people when they are near a store that sells stuff they are paid to market.

Zero privacy very soon.

CBC News app in the Google PlayStore works on BB10. There was a delay opening the app, but after that it seems fine.

You are not an isolated user group - changes to sites affect many different browsers. Report to the publisher that they broke rendering in Opera Mini, which represents about 350 million users.

CBC.ca works now but has some rather insignificant articles above the world news every day. You have to scroll down to get the world news. CBC.ca/news works as well, but only with local news.

Re: Website opens then shuts down

This is clearly a CBC issue and not a BlackBerry fault.

Are the recent changes the same in Opera Mini?

Don't know. Don't have Opera mini. However, cbc/ca is now back the way it should be. Took quite a while for CBC to get it right. Sometimes it pays to wait.

That's all you can do short of using a different device with an up to date browser.

Re: Website opens then shuts down

I'm going to post this while I'm thinking about it....

As an example: I had an issue with the Delta website when accessed from my Passport. When pointing the browser to delta.com the mobile site always loads and one has to scroll down and select the full site to get to the full site. There is no way to select to always open the full site. The issue I ran into one time is at one point the link to the full website would not work. If memory serves, clicking the full website link would just return to the mobile page and I couldn't get to the full website from the mobile website. The work around for me was to bookmark a different page at the full website (I think it was My Flights). Whatever, I bookmarked the page and when I opened that from bookmarks it would open without redirecting to the mobile site, and then I could navigate around the full website. After a while, the link on the mobile site started working properly again.

As in the OP's case, the issue with delta.com and the mobile site corrected after a while. The point of my example, in the generals sense, is that there may be work arounds. Probably not in the OP's case, but when encountering issues it may pay to experiment. And as the OP found, some really weird issues often correct later on.

aiharkness, I have used your solution on some web sites that flip to a mobile web page when they seem to drop some information seen on a full pc web page.

aiharkness, nobody needs a different device to achieve updated rendering.

Opera Mini is available for practically any device and its rendering is always current because it displays pre-rendered pages generated by an Opera server. The caveat is that it only receives filetypes supported by that server.

I was using Opera Mini on BB3 with no BIS and no BES; and still use it today on BB10. Opera Mini is a quick easy fix for mobile browsing and its available on all stores (BlackBerry World, Play Store, etc.).

Okaaay

I haven't used Opera since back in the BBOS days. My experience with it was poor compared to the BlackBerry browser. I quit after a day or so of trying it out, and never considered giving it a try again. I would indeed rather find another solution than Opera Mini.

Anyway, the OP's problem was the website, and it resolved on its own.

Nothing resolves on its own; except maybe the laws of thermodynamics.
