I have a t mobile bold 9780 and I don't have data plan service, is there a way to download maps just basically for my area where i live in California and be able to use it offline, when I need directions or find a address or something? thanks

Nope. Most of the map applications only download the portion of the map they need at any given place and time. To get maps, you need an active BB data plan

For what you want to do, a stand alone GPS is your best and probably cheapest option.
