Scientific Calculator, RPN

I would love to find a scientific calculator application for my BB8700, especially one that allows reverse-polish-notation (RPN) entry, something like an HP 32S / 42S etc... is there something available?

The calculator app that comes with the 8700 is okay for basic stuff, but there are no trigonometric, exponential, or other useful functions... and its precision is very limited... try entering anything beyond 99 million... to enter 128 million, you need to enter 12.8 million, then multiply by 10.

bjchantry 02-20-2006 12:53 AM

Still in Beta?

I was looking for exactly the same thing and one of the users in this forum, patrickh, sent me an app he was working on about 7 months ago. It works well, some minor display inconsistecies, but I never heard from him again. Anyway, I have it on my BB and it is the only caculator I use due to the RPN. Patrickh, if you're out there, any update for us?

patrickh 02-20-2006 07:48 AM

I am still here.. I just have no time to work on it.. What update/feature do you need?

- P

mbay2002 02-20-2006 12:11 PM

got it!

Patrick got me a copy, thanks a million, this is a big improvement over the calculator that comes with the BB, and it uses RPN entry!!!!

Way to go, Patrick! (y) (y)

klwebb 02-20-2006 06:15 PM

Where can one find this RPN calculator? I would like to download and checkout.

Thank you,

I've got a bunch of engineers here that would be giddy to get a decent RPN calculator on their blackberries. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are some free tools out there, guys! Check out this one http://www.bradgoodman.com/blackberry/ -- scientific calculator, engineering calcuator, triginometric calculator - and more! so far the best though not 100% user-friendly.

Dwitczak 03-13-2006 07:42 PM

I would really love to have an RPN scientific calculator, thanks

Also, does anyone know of a good simple FREE Financial calculator too?

RPN calculator

I've been searching for an RPN calculator (preferably one that feels like one of the HP models). How can I obtain/purchase a copy?

BTW, I currently use Bizmathica from ShrunkenHead Software and it works fine...does financial math as well as trig, etc., however it is not RPN.

patrickh 04-03-2006 07:54 PM

PM me for beta of my RPN calculator.. It's a scientific / engineering / programmer's calculator rather than financial.

Gregg S 04-04-2006 12:31 AM

I'am new to Blackberry, I downloaded the rc.jad file for the RPN calculator, but how do I get it into my Blackberry 8700?

KonTiki 04-04-2006 10:04 AM

Jad files are meant to be loaded OTA, unless you convert it ot a cod file (There are threads here that do cover how to do that) you will not be able to download it via the desktop manager.

access the link from your blackberry rather than your desktop. .jad files are OTA downloads directly to the handset. Slick, huh?

Would like the link for the RPN calculator. Have an 8700c and can download from a phone browser link with a .jad file, if it's available.

Thank you. (Wish I knew what "pm" meant).

Please PM me if you want to be on the beta..

There is now very limited support for complex numbers and support for Pearl. Plus a few changes reported by beta users (like you can no longer enter -123 as "negative 123". You have to do "123 neg" or "123 _" to be more consistent with HP calcs.

Lygea, Welcome to Lygea Calculators makes HP emulators. Their emulators for PPC are fantastic, and the one for BlackBerry is promising. It's only the HP 10B, so no scientific functions. But I am keeping an eye on this group hoping that something comes soon. The HP 10B is NOT RPN for some reason...

RPN Feedback

patrickh, the RPN functionality is great. Here are a few suggestions:

+Keyboard operation: Needs to execute when an operator is entered via the keyboard (ie 25 (enter) 10 + should immediately return 35)
+Keyboard entry for other functions (ie, quick access to ^, etc)

Additionally, check out: Pocket 12C SE Financial Calculator. They make a Blackberry product as well, but not RPN.

It is amazing to me that there is not a developed RPN calculator for the blackberry. This exists for the Treo, but the blackberry has 8 million subscribers, and I would guess 90% of whom are users of hp12c's or hp 15c's. Seems like a prime business opportunity to me.

Thanks!

patrickh 04-23-2007 08:37 PM

You can sym-o to get to ^ on a qwerty..

Yes.. execute on operator.. when I have time.. In the mean time you can enter something like 1 2 +<enter>

patrickh, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but while I was looking for an RPN calculator with financial functions I found this:
SourceForge.net: HorsePower Files

It's not blackberry specific, but it actually works rather nicely on my 7100. Looking at the source, it appears they use images for the red LED digits in the display instead of fonts -- very cool!

I like the command-line style entry which you use in your calculator, as opposed to the button-emulation style used in theirs. Perhaps you could incorporate their LED display and financial functions?

Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to keep working on the calculator and thought this might give you some ideas.

sooks 07-13-2007 05:10 PM

Anybody heard from patrickh lately?

You OK there?

patrickh 07-15-2007 03:07 AM

Yesyes.. still here.. just busy :) Yes.. Financial functions are cool.. I will see what I can do..

sooks 07-20-2007 07:48 PM

Glad to hear you're still alive!

Two primary requests:
-Functions execute on operand
-Formatting (1,000,000) would be nice.

Ben

Proteus 07-30-2007 07:17 PM

Please, please, please!!

Do a bit more with your calculator!! I don't do a lot of heavy math, and if you made a few small changes the calculator would be most of what I need. As requested earlier in the thread, making the math execute immediately (25 {enter} 3 {+} (result)) would make the feel "exact" to traditional HPs. If you also made the existing functions keyboard mapped, I (and I'm sure many) would have most of what we need.

Patrick, thanks so much for the link; it works great on my 8830.

Yet Another Beta Tester

patrickh...I, too, would love to have your rpn scientific calculator. I bought my first HP in 1973 (HP 35), the one with the error in the "exp of ln of 2.02" (returned 2.00 instead of 2.02). I've owned an HP 41C, an HP 15C and an HP 32S II. Still have all but the 41C, which crapped out. The sweet spot was the 15C. Have used PalmCalc on my Treo 700P, but now have transitioned to a BB 8800. Having withdrawal. You're a saint, by the way. ...Jack
