Potassium permanganate crystal is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula KMnO4. It is a salt consisting of K+ and MnO4− ions. Formerly known as permanganate of potash or Condy's crystals, it is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give intensely purple solutions, the evaporation of which leaves prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals.
Almost all applications of potassium permanganate exploit its oxidizing properties. As a strong oxidant that does not generate toxic by-product, KMnO4 has many niche uses.
Potassium permanganate is one of the principal chemicals used in the film and television industries to "age" props and set dressings. Its oxidising effects create "hundred year old" or "ancient" looks on hessian cloth, ropes, timber and glass. It was used on props and sets in films such as "Troy", "300" and "Indiana Jones".

Safety and handling
As an oxidizer that generates the dark brown product MnO2, potassium permanganate rapidly stains virtually any organic material such as skin, paper, and clothing. Solid KMnO4 is a strong oxidizer and thus should be kept separated from oxidizable substances. Reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid produces the highly explosive manganese(VII) oxide (Mn2O7). When solid KMnO4 is mixed with pure glycerol or other simple alcohols it will result in a violent combustion reaction.
3 C3H5(OH)3 + 14 KMnO4 → 14 MnO2 + 14 KOH + 9 CO2 + 5 H2O
Please treat all chemicals with great respect. Avoid contact with skin and protect any contact with eyes and sensitive parts of body. Always use eye protection and protective gears when handling chemicals. Keep the chemicals beyond the reach of Children in a safe place. Avoid breathing dust or fume while handling. Please use correct amount in each application and use it on your own risk.
Handy Hint for potted plants and kitchen gardens:
Here is handy hint for using in plants and kitchen Gardens. This is how I use it and please check/test first in your application if you wish to use it my way.
First Prepare a concentrated solution and use 5 to 10 drops at a time in1 litres of tap water.
I use a 500 gms. tomato ketchup dispensing Jar. I use my old tomoto souce jar which I purchased from a Super market with sauce.
Clean the jar thoroughly and remove the label. Fill half with Luke warm water. Add couple of drops of dishwashing liquid ( Biodegradable only). Addhalf tea spoon full of Condy’s crystals. Full the container to the top with tap water. Close it and shake it slowly. Allow to stand 10 mins and then it is ready to use. Always shake mix before use. Label this dispenseras Condy's Crystal solution concentrate and keep it in an isolated place.
Use 5 or 10n drops of above mix inone litres of tap water. Colour of water should be light to bright pink. Spray this mix on your potted plants or plants in the kitchen garden. Drench them thoroughly. Apply this every one to two weeks in summer or two to three weeks in winter. This controls insects pest, ants, fly and many soil and weather related diseases. Effect is slow but long lasting. Always spray away from walls and furniture in surrounding area to avoid any stain. It can also stain light colour pots so take precaution.
Condy's Crystals is used in Water treatment and disinfection
Potassium permanganate is used extensively in the water treatment industry. It is used as a regeneration chemical to remove iron and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) from well water via a "Manganese Greensand" Filter. "Pot-Perm" is also obtainable at pool supply stores, is used additionally to treat waste water. Historically it was used to disinfect drinking water. It currently finds application in the control of nuisance organisms such as Zebra mussels in fresh water collection and treatment systems.
Ethylene absorbents extend storage time of bananas even at high temperatures. This effect can be exploited by packing bananas in polyethylene with potassium permanganate as an ethylene absorbent, that doubles a bananas lifespan up to 3–4 weeks without the need for refrigeration. Ethylene released by the bananas encourage it to ripen; by removing it by oxidation, the bananas' ripening is delayed.
Potassium permanganate is typically included in survival kits: as a fire starter, water sterilizer and for creating distress signals on snow.

Application as cost effective wood dye:
Potassium Permanganate is a dark purplish / violet colour granules that dissolves easily in water. As a guide 20grams ofPotassium Permanganate dissolved in a litre of water will stain most hardwoods a nice warm brown colour, although it turns Maple a Golden Brown. Many Craftsmen prefer to use a weaker solution because this allows them to build up the colour gradually until the required shade is reached.can also be used to dye Cane to a dark mahogany colour. May require several application. If the colour is too dark it can be lightened by washing the wood down with a solution of sodium thiosulfate (also known as hypo). A made up solution of potassium permanganate loses its potency over time so make a new solution as required.

Potassium Permanganate (Condy’s Crystals) has numerous uses in gardening as well as in other areas.
Condy’s Crystals is great for:
I originally came across the gardening use of Condy’s Crystals from a South Island gardener who told me how to apply the chemical for club root control in brassicas.
Dissolve a quarter teaspoon of Condy’s Crystals in one litre of water along with 3 desert spoons of common salt. Once dissolved the coloured mix is added to a further 9 litres of water and stirred to mix. One litre of this diluted mixture is then poured into each planting hole where a cabbage or other brassica is to grow. The preparation sterilizes the surrounding soil and reduces damage to the roots from the club root disease.
A number of gardeners like to sterilize the soil in glasshouses or in areas where the same crop is grown year after year, such as tomatoes. There are products such as Basamid that can do this and in the past many gardeners would use Jeyes Fluid which is also a sterilizing agent. The first is rather expensive and the second one is difficult to obtain these days.
My suggestion is to make up the above preparation as for club root but to use only half the amount of water thus doubling the strength of the solution. This then would be watered over 3 to 5 square metres of soil that you wish to treat. The soil should be moist but not wet prior to application. Leave for a week or so then water the area lightly to force the solution deeper into the soil. About a week or two prior to planting in the area, flood the soil to wash away any residue that may be left.
Sterilising Organic Fertilisers and manure.
It is a good idea to sterilize manure prior to use. This helps control transmissible disease and certain insect pests.
Dissolve a teaspoon full of Condy’s Crystals in 4 litres of water. Add a teaspoon full of biodegradable dish washing liquid. Mix well to develop light to bright pink colour water. Spray this mix generously on the manure dump. Cover with plastic and let it stand for at least 24 Hrs. before use. Mix well prior to spreading/using.
For moss control in lawns place one teaspoonful into 9 litres of water and spray over the moss.
To deter carrot fly add a few grains of Condy’s Crystals to water to make a light pinky colour and spray this over the young carrot tops.
