You may achieve a temporary fix by holding down the trackball and at the same time rolling it in the direction it is stuck until it frees up. This is RIM's recommended fix. It may work, and you may go awhile before it sticks again.

You might look for online videos of the procedure to replace the trackball on your model BlackBerry. It is fairly simple. If you are game, then search for a trackball replacement kit. Be sure you buy a genuine BlackBerry replacement part.

The problem typically has 2 causes - lint under the track ball or it got wet.

The best fix for dirt or lint that I know of and to amplify what Ira said above: turn the device off. Press and hold the trackball and slowly rotate in the direction that it DOESN'T work. Then, continuing to press, roll it in every direction for at least a minute. Turn the device back on and see if it now works.

If that fixes the problem, great. And always keep it in a pouch, not in your pocket or purse as the case may be.

If it got wet, then all bets are off on your ability to fix it. As said above you could try to replace the trackball or have a repair center do it for you. There are several Youtube videos that show you how. And I think we even have something in our FAQ about it.

Default Re: HELP!! Trackball problem

I replaced THREE trackballs on my Tour. The early production run had lots of problems with trackballs going bad or getting dirty. Holding the trackball down and rolling it to feed in a skinny strip of paper sometimes dislodged the dirt. Other times replacing the mechanism was the only solution.

Ultimately I solved my problem by upgrading to the Bold 9650 with the new trackpad. Bes upgrade I ever made. The Tour had a redesigned low-profile trackball and it stunk.
