Default Curve 8530 vs. Tour 9630

Please Login to Remove!

Hey im looking to upgrade from my current phone to either a 8530 or a tour. Im not sure which one to buy as i know that the tour is supposed to be an overall better phone, but the new curve also brings various capabilities to the table. I know that the tour is a very good phone overall, but im still reluctant to buy a blackberry with a trackball as ive read that trackballs are being phased out. I like the curves trackpad as it seems more durable. Does anyone have any input?

oh yeah, if this would factor in, Sasktel's curve 8530 is $40 and the tour is $100

Wait a bit longer and get the Tour 2. Best of the tour + wi-fi and trackpad.

I decided not to wait for the Tour2 and went with the Curve 8530. I figure in a year if the Tour2 is all that I'll upgrade then... the bugs should be worked out by then, hopefully. I love my Curve.

well if i waited for the tour 2 i would have to wait six months after the set release of the tour 2 to get it since im on sasktel. The only bb's they have that are decent are the tour and the curve 8530.

I did a lot of comparison... and I went with the Tour.

If you really examine the specs closely... the ONLY thing the 8530 has over the Tour is trackpad and wifi.

The 8530 has EVDO-0 3G speed, whereas the Tour offers EVDO-A. The Tour has a slightly bigger and more comfortable keyboard IMO, bigger and brighter screen, a better camera WITH flash, sturdier feel, better battery life, and a SIM card slot for GSM world-wide roaming.

When I went to the Sprint store, I tried both of them, but the 8530 felt cheaper and awkward in my hand... but the Tour felt 'just right'.

I asked the sales rep if they were having returns because of the trackball on the Tour, and she held up her personal phone- a Tour- and said, "The first batch that were released last year had problems, but they fixed that. I have had my phone for several months and never had a problem with the trackball. They key is that you have to clean it periodically, I just use a bit of alcohol to clean it."

I've also heard that the trackpad's give off a high amount of radiation- which is not something I care to have next to my head when I'm talking on the phone.

For me it came down to wifi. Since I don't need it- that solved the dilemma right there. If I want wifi, I have my netbook.

I can clean the trackball, that's no biggie. It is easy to see how stuff can get under the trackball; dried skin, dust, smoke, hair, pet fur, etc. But, if you clean it using alcohol or the 'strip of paper' technique- it shouldn't be a problem.

I've had my Tour for about three days now and absolutely love it. I've gotten so I can type pretty quick, and the download speeds are pretty fast thanks to the EVDO-A speeds.

I asked a similar question in the 9530 forum, when I was comparing the 9330 vs 9530... but then opted for the 9630. One person commented that my decision was the best out of the group- and now having the Tour in my possession- I couldn't agree more.

What I'd suggest is going to a Sprint store and playing with each phone to see how it feels in your hand and how things look when comparing the screens. Hope that helps.

hahahaha! Apparently someone forgot to do their homework... Maybe next time you hear something, don't take it as a fact... Cheers!

Of course, maybe it's all just propaganda...

I stand corrected...
Optical Mouse Cancer Warning Hoax

However, that still does not negate everything else I said; the Tour still offers a lot more IMO... unless you need wifi, don't want to worry about cleaning the trackball, want slower 3G, a downgraded camera without flash, prefer a smaller & lower res screen along with a slightly smaller keyboard. Decisions... decisions.

i like the 8530 it small less than 4oz does everything i need to do. personally i'm not one of those that walk around all day staring at my cell phone constantly. we all need to get a life and become less connected to devices that track our every movement and conveerastion, and our thoughts through what we google or read on line.

I am aware of people who will not venture a few blocks from home without a phone or even go to the bathroom without it. Hell I have driven across country 3 time with out a cell phone! There may well be a Big Brother watching and listening!

Another vote for the 9650, available now on Sprint and shortly on Verizon. This is the device the original Tour *should* have been.

If I absolutely HAD to choose between the 9630 and 8530, after having owned an original Tour 9630, I'd recommend the 8530 instead. The trackpad problem on the Tour never really was fixed. I was on my third trackball on my Tour when I upgraded to the new Bold 9650. The trackpad is worth it's weight in gold.
