Using wifi on a BB Storm 2 which has no service contract.

I recently moved from a BB Storm 2 to iPhone 4 due to the fact that RIM is not providing the new OS 6 to Storm 2 users. Anyhow, I no longer haave any service on my S2 but thought that I would still be able to use the wifi if I chose to do so. However, I cannot connect to the internet using my home wifi network. Do I have to unlock the SIM card?
Some carriers require the WiFi service book before you can connect to WiFI. The only way to get that is to have a BB data plan. Apparently Telus is one of those carriers.
IMHO, leaving BB for an iPhone just because OS 6 isn't going to be on your BB is not a good reason to leave. OS 6 isn't that big of a deal. There has to be more to it than that.
I don't understand. My iPod touch can connect to the internet by wifi and it has no carrier. I assumed my BB S2 would be able to do the same. Why can't I just turn on the wifi and connect to a wifi network. I relaize I wouldn't be able to use it as a phone.
And I didn't go to an iPhone just because of the OS issue. It was because I was tired of using a device which has such an awful interface and internet capabilities. I use the internet a lot on my smartphone and the iPhone is a revelation compared to the S2. I love the iPhone.
I just thought rather than sell my S2 I could give it to my partner to use aroundthe house on our wifi network.
Because BlackBerry devices are not iPods, iPads, iPhones, or any other MID. They rely on the BlackBerry server infrastructure to function properly (to include web browsing), regardless of the connection medium (GPRS, EDGE, 3G, WiFi).
