I wouldn't expect VZW cell to read too far out into the ocean.
If your gonna be going international, you might want to break out your old 8830 WE for international use (for the duration of the trip of course then just switch back to your Curve when you get back)

(I probably will have both my BB's with me but I won't be using them as much as I usually do, infact last time I took a vacation I barely looked at my Berry ad that alone was a vacation!! Of course I didn't have a work BB back then)

That's good! When I worked in the Caribbean, I saw a ugly sides of BBs ruining family vacations. Had a family where Dad wouldn't put down his BB while on the boat ride out to snorkel, and the kids kept pleading with him to do so. It was kinda sad.
Then on a different trip, had another guest put his BB into his swimming trunks and then jumped into the water. It was quite funny because the moment he jumped in, he realized it was in his pocket and I remember the smile on his wife's face as if to say "finally no more of that blasted device for the rest of our time here."
