Profile exceptions don't actually block calls or SMS messages though. You're just setting the BB to not alert you when specific people try to contact you -- which might work for people in certain cases.
You'd still have to deal with the SMS messages and whatever voicemails were left.
The firewall approach works for blocking SMS but it's all-or-nothing (you can't block specific contacts) and you will still be charged for those SMS messages or have them deducted from your messaging pool.
Youmail has a nice feature in that you can send certain callers and unknown/blocked caller ID numbers to a greeting that doesn't accept messages but instead hangs up after the greeting is done playing. They have some clever "error" greetings if you don't want to let on that you're ignoring them. However, it only works for voice calls (not an SMS solution).
