Default GPS Problem on 9630 Tour...Help!!!!!

Please Login to Remove!

Morning all,

I have a 9630 Tour that came with GPS as I believe most of them do. I made a few phone calls to Sprint asking if GPS was free. I was told as long as I have a data plan it is free. I used it a few times with no problems. Yesterday I was in Chicago ready to come home to Ohio and it stopped working. It was giving me a mapped out route (like Google Maps or Blackberry Maps) instead of the turn by turn audio it was giving me in the past. Now it is telling me if I want turn by turn I have to upgrade/pay for that premium service. So my question is …..is it free for the turn by turn or do I have to pay for that. If this thing only gives me the mapped out version I have no use for it as I can use Google Maps for that. Also if it isn’t free is there a free GPS software?

Thanks for the help folks

When you say GPS, are you referring to Sprint Navigator?

I have used that fine on my 8330 without any issues. I would try a battery pull. Otherwise, I would call Sprint (I know how painful that can be) and ask them.

If you were in downtown Chicago among high rises, the device might not have been able to locate satellites. Common, often forgotten problem with GPS.

This is true, however, that shouldn't prompt him to upgrade to the premium version of Sprint Navigator. In Sprint Navigator, when you're out of GPS coverage, you get an audible alert saying "No GPS coverage in this area" and then when you return to GPS coverage, you get an audible alert saying "You now have GPS coverage".

Does GPS work with BB Maps? Try that and see if the GPS is still functional. If not, you can try the following, from "another" BB site:

Step 1: go to Options>status and select it
Step 2: Type xxx8220;testxxx8221; (without the quotes) xxx8211; xxx8220;Device Self Test Applicationxxx8221; appears
Step 3: Press trackball or menu key and select xxx8220;startxxx8221;
Step 4: scroll down to GPS and select it (checkmark will appear)
Step 5: then click RUN
Step 6: Youxxx8217;ll be instructed to go outside, etc. With a clear path to the sky click the trackball and select xxx8220;Start Fixingxxx8221;

It could take up to 2 minutes to find your GPS fix. If you get a time out go to xxx8220;start fixingxxx8221; again. When successful you can click trackball and select next. If asked to go to the next fix select yes xxx8211; if asked did this past the test, select yes. It will now say no more test click close. Now Hit you menu button and close. If you are successful in xxx8220;fixingxxx8221; your GPS, Blackberry Maps and Google Maps will work with it.
