I am pretty sure you can only download them via blackberry.com/aim and blackberry.com/livemessenger etc if you have an 8320. Your Blackberry browser tells the site what model your phone is

Well ... how did you do it? In fact, can you do an Advanced Backup/Restore and post the the IM client service books that you have, in case they might be newer than ones that have been posted before (if that was part of what fixed it, that is)?

...didn't work, at all. Then again, I'm on AT&T Mobility, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Anyone else want to try?

Windows Live Messenger - 30-second pause, then error during signon
Connection Error(65): Problem receiving data from the server.
Yahoo! Messenger - Logged in successfully
Google Talk - Logged in successfully
ICQ - N/A (don't use)
Well, there you have it. AT&T us down, as usual.

Tried this with an 8100 and while the stuff loaded when I tried to sign in to AIM it just referred me to blackberry.com/aim/ and said to register with the service. In other words it did not work.

Yes, I used the restore option for them with DM and followed the instructions above with the three downloads given.
The service books were the ones from wireless village though. Are there newer ones that are out there? If so, could you point me to the download?

Okay, so, let me get this straight.
1. You uninstalled all IM apps and wiped your service books from the device.
2. You restored the above-listed service books.
3. You connected to Application Loader and installed only the apps in the first .zip file.
4. Device reboots.
5. You connected your device via the AppLoader again and installed the set of apps in the second .zip file.
6. Device reboots again.
7. Your IM apps work.
...is that the order?

Wow. As nice as it might be to have the official IM apps...I'm not sure it's worth all this instead of plunking down a bit of green for JiveTalk...

Oh, I *have* JiveTalk, dropped the $30 on the user license, lol. But I love the RIM IM clients far more than JiveTalk, and I'd love to play with them and see how they are.

I can certainly relate to the "love to play with them" part -- that's one of the personality quirks that has used up a major portion of my life to date.
I might even try all this on my 8300 on TMo...So far, just skimming these threads, it looks like it's a bit of a sketchy process, and I really wanted to avoid lots of experimentation and tweaking downtime. Is the process really clearly defined and reliable now?

Not that I've noticed. I doubt this will even work on AT&T, but I've sure as heck been trying. Doesn't ever seem to work, though, using any of the above combination of steps.

When I go through this process at step 3 I get a message that
"there are no additional applications designed for my device found" after selecting the .alx files for the IM apps. Any ideas?
