Help with 7100T attachments
Please Login to Remove!
I am new to the whole Blackberry thing. I am trying to view PDF attachments with my 7100t. When I click on the attachment and select to open, I have one of two things happen. Either, the attachment appears to download and a message box says that the attachment is empty, or the clock appears by the attachment and it never finishes downloading.
I have never successfully viewed a PDF attachment.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Doug

I dont believe support for pdf files is available yet..
I have also heard that t-mobile is having issues with their servers not being updated correctly, as I have heard reports that even the opening of images doenst work properly yet.

PDF should be working but I think T-Mobile is having rollout pains. (i.e. more glitchy at first, like a first model of a new brand of smartphone)
If you are impatient for getting PDF to work, there are some workarounds such as getting an hosted BES/MDS account. (But not everyone is interested in one).

What about .jpg files? I I have never been able to open attachments on my 7100t -- though the only two types I have tried are MP3 and JPG. I am running the most current sotware (3.8.0.128) available.
Any thoughts? Also, I heard Varichat is a great IM client but I have seen earlier posts from users not being able to use the services due to some port issues? Does anyone know if this has been resolved. I don't wanna buy the program and then realize it doesn't work on T-Mobile right away.
Thanks,
Nick

<for at least the 25th time>
There are two ways to view JPG/GIF image files. One is to have BES 4.0 and Handheld 4.0 code. Then you can view those attachments.
The other way (with v3.8 or higher) is to post the images to a web site, and use the browser to select and download them.

I don't see how posting an image to a server is a viable answer when referring to email attachments; considering i cannot see the attached image, let alone do anything else with it. I have had success downloading images I wanted to use as backgrounds, etc.
Thanks anyway.

Fine; I was explaining to you how to view JPG/GIF files.
Here is the answer to your question:
You can only view JPG/GIF attachments with BES 4.0 and Handheld 4.0.

Image attachments will work only with BES/BWC 4.0 and BB 4.0 Handheld
S/W. With regards to other attachment types, the only ones that will work
are: MS Word, Excel & PPT, Corel WordPerfect, Adobe PDF & text files.
Just a heads up, those attachment types will work only and only if they
are orignal type of documents (i.e. it can not have scanned images or
documents, etc. also stuff like charts for excel will not pull up). I know
some PDF files are scanned images, therefore that will not work.
The way the BB receives attachments all depends on how the BWC/BES
handles it regards of w/c carrier you have. BWC/BES decodes and
compresses the attachment, and then sends it to the BB in which the BB
will not receive the original attachment but the necessary data from it.
For instance, an email w/ an attachment on your BB/BES might arrive
with a size of 50Kb. The size of the transmitted message to the BB might
be around 15Kb or less. Hope that clarifies the attachment issue!!!!!

BES 4.0, as opposed to the handheld OS code for the 7100t is available. It is a server based solution. You either need to run your own BES (with the corresponding back end Exchange, Notes or Groupwise server) or use a hosted BES provider like MailStreet, MyBlueBerry or one of the other ones.
You need both components (BES 4.0 and Handheld 4.0) in order to open e-mail picture attachments.

How does one upgrade the BWC client to 4.0? I've just upgraded the handheld to 4.0 and would really like to see jpeg images. Thanks!

One doesn't; one must wait for the carrier to do so.
Has anyone seen anything published about BWC 4.0?

Just tried sending myself a .pdf file via T-Mobile BWC, and attachment services works perfectly...
No dice with the .jpg file though
---------------------------------------------
So I give up, does that mean that BWC though T-Mobile is or is not running BWC/BES 4.0?
I'm so confused..

.pdf files that are scanned wont open on a blackberry. .pdf files that are converted or created will open on a blackberry.

I concur that .pdf files are fine with BWC. So is .doc and .xls files BUT there is NO GO with picture attachments via BWC. I think it might be that BWC is still no upgraded to OS 4. However, those with BES 4.0 are successful with picture attachment.

Has anyone seen it published the BWC 4.0 (or whatever it is called) will handle picture attachments, or is this just wishful thinking?

I still can't believe this thing is unable to automatically view images/pdf's in emails. That is really a MUST for me since all my faxes go straight to my email in PDF format.
