Hello All --

I am hoping that someone can help me out with setting up mass storage mode on my Pearl. I added a 1 gig mini card, and I can access the files using the destop manager, however I cannot get mass storage mode support to work.

I tried enabling all the options, and I even tried different USB ports, but I can't get it to work. I've alreadey tried reinstalling the software and resetting the little guy.

Any suggestions?

there was another thread on this same thing. I believe this guy set all the settings correct and for the life of him could not get it to work..
try options > advanced options > media card > media card support=on
Mass storage mode support=on
auot enable mass storage support when connected=on
those are my settings and everything works fine on my BB..
make sure you have 2.0 USB and try going into "my computer" and see if you can see it as a removable drive... I have windows XP and it makes all my removable drives the F: drive...
also make sure you have formated your card on the BB
when you go into the advanced options > media card > hit the menu again and then format card...

The Pearl is only compatible with the microSD...

Thanks -- I tried all that. I used the card in a card reader, and all the files are there, but the pearl refuses to function as an external drive no matter what I do!

Its a Sandisk microsd card.

Did you install DM from the disk that was included in the box? It has a USB driver for the Pearl.

Also, you may want to delete DM, connect the Pearl with the USB cable, then reinstall DM.

Also, did you say the card can be read with a desktop reader [with the SD adapter]. If so, format the chip via My Computer's interface on the desktop. You might want to try this first before uninstalling DM.

Also, when making all these changes, after each one, remove the battery on the Pearl, wait 30 seconds, then turn on the Pearl.

Have you tried other USB ports?

Have you NOT opened DM and connected the Pearl with the cable? If so and the folder does not open, go to Device Manager and see if the USB port is there and if there is an exclamation point.

If there is an exclamation point, the USB driver is not working. Click update driver or repair and reinstall the USB driver from the disk that came with the Pearl.

On reading your post again I see that it works with DM and not the PC. This tells me it's a USB port problem. See my posts about looking in Device Manager, etc.

If you have any firewalls, check those programs to make sure that it did not deny the port or connection without asking if you wanted to do that. I have Zone Alarm and sometimes it denies a connection without asking me if I want to deny a port, connection or install. I sometimes have to open Zone Alarm and manually click to allow the connection.

Also, are you sure that DM is accessing the chip and not the on board memory? If it is accessing the chip it will list "media card."

Also remove the chip, make sure it is firmly reseated and do the Battery reboot, again.

The device manager is clear -- no exclamation marks. I've loaded the card with stuff via the DM.

What port did you have to unblock?

When you hookup the USB cable to the Pearl, open up Device Manager on the PC.

If the USB port is connected to the Pearl, "Blackberry Device" should be one of the listed connections. [see pic of my device with BB connected]. Do you see that on yours? If so, then something is going on with the chip or your BB settings.

Double check your BB settings and that "Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected" is set to "yes" and that you have saved that setting. That will tell the Pearl to open an XP folder when you connect the Pearl directly, instead of through DM.

I do not know the "port." All Zone Alarm does is pop up a window asking permission to allow a new connection, network, command, execution, install or port use. Most firewalls work this same way.

Still no luck. The BB shows up in the device mgr. I did find a folder the RIM directory called "My BB drive". It shows the card and device memory, but I can't open it through windows like an ordinary folder...very strange.

Hmm... I know that this may sound stupid, but did you...

1) Back up your MicroSD Card?
2) Reformat it in the pearl?
3) Make sure that all the settings are right (as described earlier in the thread)
4) then use Desktop Manager to transfer the files to the SD Card?

When I first got the pearl, I did NOT format the card in the phone. That was my problem... nothing would recognize it. I would suggest starting from scratch again, with the formatting of the card in the Pearl, and not on the computer.

Once I did that it works fine.

Also there might have been an IT policy pushed to your phone if its from work making sure you can not use the Mass storage mode on your BB! I dont know what else to tell you other than that since it seems you have tried everything else under the sun. Last step if you dont have any IT restrictions on your BB is to call T-mobile and talk to CS and maybe have then ship you out another phone...

To start all over, from scratch, make sure you have backed up any contacts, etc.

Then go to

click <settings>

click <security options>

click <general settings>

While in general settings, press <menu> key, dotted key to left of trackball.

A <wipe handheld> option will appear on the menu.

Select that.

When reinstalling, do so from scratch, do NOT restore from your back up files.

Also, I'd have your MicroSD chip in the slot during the reinstall.

Make sure you choose Blackberry Internet Service [BIS], NOT Blackberry Enterprise Service [BES] when the prompt asks that.

As you said on PinStack, call T-Mo. I'd do that BEFORE wiping. They may have a bulletin on this since they deal with 100,000 calls as opposed to a few of us on the various Boards.

You can call on Sundays, they are open.

Guys -

Just to update everyone on my experience with TMO. I spent over an hour with them and got no where. One of the techs was from RIM and he tried everything to get the mass storage mode to work on the pearl, including:

Verifiying media card settings
Disabling power management for the USB hubs
Reloading Handheld software
After an hour or so of this, he suggested I replace the device, and transferred me back to TMO. They were unsure how to proceed. Was this "buyer's remorse" or a "handheld exchange?" Duh! I told them that the phone is barely two weeks old, and that they had not even billed me for it yet. Either way, they are going to send me a new phone. I am also going to try a new USB cable.

I want to eliminate the possibility that this is a micro card issue. If you remove the card and leave mass storage support on, will Windows still recognize it as a usb drive ?

Do you have a network drive mapped to the PC you're trying to use with Mass Storage Mode?

If you do, and it uses the drive letter that is next in line behind your installed devices then you will not be able to see the Mass Storage Device. You have to go into Disk Management and give it a different drive letter. This is a common occurance with removable media and Windows.
