I'm sure I've seen this information before, but I can't find it via searching, nor reading the various FAQ's...

I have a BB (that I own) tied into my companies BES server. On my work desktop machine (which is connected to the company LAN / Exchange server /etc) the BB desktop manager is installed with the BES option.

I'd also like to install the BB desktop manager on my own laptop for the purpose of loading new software, backing up, and using the phone as a modem. If feasible, I wouldn't mind copying my BB's contact list to the notebook. This laptop is NEVER on the company LAN.

Which desktop manager install option do I choose: BES/Redirector or BIS? If I choose the BES install type, do I just choose any mail server type? Also, if I choose the BES install type, it'll later ask me if I want to use BES or the redirector...

I seem to remeber reading about someone who messed up their BB (killed their BES activation or something) because they chose the wrong option - so now I'm paranoid...

It doesn't really matter in this situation. I would probably choose BIS just to be safe.

I would say install BES, since your BB is on a BES. The settings have to deal with your BB, not what computer your using. I remember seeing somewhere that the BIS option installs xtra/different service books on you BB. I'm sure it's OK to have both, but I have seen people that switch from BIS to BES have problems with random things. It could just be fluke, but it's not gunna hurt to have the BES option installed on your laptop. You just won't be able to connect to your company mail through it. Which you wouldn't be able to anyways with BIS installed

I installed with this BIS option and it didn't do any harm. However, when I try to sync the BB's contacts to the notebook's outlook, it gives an error that it can't do that type of sync because the bb is set to sync over BES.

Any work around?
